Teaching a Dog to poop on a walk...

This is a question for my sister in law...

She has an Airedale called Rosie who will only go to the toilet in their back yard. They are desperate to get her to poop whilst out on a walk. Any suggestions of how to do it???

Re: Teaching a Dog to poop on a walk...

The way forward is to think of a trigger word or phrase - we use "wees n poos" - and then the minute she squats on a walk, say the trigger word loudly and clearly. As soon as she finishes, give her lots of praise and tell her she is a good girl. It will take time and patience, but eventually you will be able to say the trigger word while you're out on a walk and she will do the necessary!

Re: Teaching a Dog to poop on a walk...

Why the desperation?

I teach my dogs to empty in the garden before they go out.

this means that there is no playing "I am not pooping yet as I know you will put me on the lead and take me home when I do" game.

It means if I am ill, I am not forced to take them out.

I do not have to carry full poo bags when I am out.

Of course the DO eliminate outdoors.

Question, how old is this dog?

It is perfectly normal and usual for young puppies NOT to want to eliminate outdoors, this is a survival mechanism.

Also, what is the strata in the yard?

Re: Teaching a Dog to poop on a walk...

It's great that she poo's in the yard but it becomes an issue when they take her out for the day, and she won't go until she gets home. It can't be good for Rosie to hold it in all day?

It's not just on walks though. They brought her round to ours over the xmas period and she was pacing up and down the garden like she does at home when she needs to go, but hours later, she still wouldn't go. The minute they got home she went straight away in the yard.

Rosie is approx 18 month old. She was a rescue but came from a house not a kennel.

The back yard is concrete with a little bit of grass and she always goes on the concrete.
