Thumbs down cars? recall? HELP.

Now, i know.. your thinking... another recall post!
but im having major problems.
and iv looked through previous posts and nothing seems to relate to my problem.

now, i have a 7 month old border collie, and hes ace, hes good at most of his basic commands. sit, down... stay... roll over... you get the idea...

now he is fine on lead, i have a long ajustable lead and i call him if hes away from me and he comes right back and sits.
hes fine in the garden, he comes and sits.
if i take him on a walk.. and i let him off lead, and call him back. NO CHANCE.
doesn't happen. i've tried treats, toys. high pitched voice to get him excited. nothing.
its like hes tauntin' me. he kinda runs upto me then runs away, like he wants me to chase him.
if i stand still or ignore him. he will go lie down away from me. and if i say stay, or try to walk up to him. he ignores me and runs away.
but if hes on lead or in the garden or the house. hes perfect.
is it his age or what?
its driving me insane. and taking a dog for a walk, that can't me allowed of lead is no fun!
if i do decided to let him off, i have to end up getting someone else to catch him by the collar. its embarrasing.
and i know, you can use the long line to help, but its almost like the adjustable lead and thats not working.
so any suggestings would be grateful.

also. chases cars, what do i do?
also used all the distracting things, like toys. ect.
not working.
tried making him 'down' when a car comes but he still gets up and makes a run for it!

please help, thanks.
sarah.

Re: cars? recall? HELP.

I would suggest that you book some one to one training with a trainer who specialises in border collies before this problem gets totally out of hand. Sorry I can't suggest anyone in particular as I don't know where in Scotland you are but your vet will most probably know the most experienced person in your area. Alternatively, Google for BC kennels as many of them supply trained or part-trained dogs and will do one to one training where there is a problem.

Our Pippin also gets very excited at cars passing by. She goes up on her hind legs and tries to chase after them. We tell her no and make her sit, she doesnt do downs yet, were working on that lol!

The worse thing you can do when your dog does not recall is run after him. Just start walking away in the other direction and the chances are your dog will follow. When he does finally come back, lots of praise.

I would also suggest that you join a training class. It really is great fun and well worth while

Re: cars? recall? HELP.

Hi, I do totally understand but it will get better if you persevere. When you say you use a long line do you hold the end? I used to attached a long line and just let it trail along behind mine then when you want him to come back just get close enough to stand on the end of the lead and recall. If he doesn't come back just give the lead a little pull and reward when he returns. Mine used to think he was on the lead just because he was trailing it behind him so he would take much more notice of me.

Try and stay positive, good luck.

Watch he doesn't wrap it round your legs as he runs past though because it really hurts!!!
