training to heel
We have a 12 month old staffie, she knows lots of commands 15 at least, but she will not walk to heel, she knows she is supposed to do it, and when you stop and tell her to heel she shuffles backwards until shes walking to heel but as soon as you move she starts pulling again, any ideas on how we can get her walking to heel please?

Re: training to heel
we tried that it hasnt worked so far, I think she doesnt understand that shes meant to stay like that she just thinks that stopping and saying "heel" means to do it then thats the command, then she can carry on like normal.

Re: training to heel
Archie is exactly the same. He's 1 now and I've been really sticking to the rules now for about 8 months and I'm still stopping and starting on each walk!
![]() Every time I stop, without a word (he will do it if I say command too) he comes and sits by my left hand side - he's just so used to my stopping and starting. If I'm lucky we can do about 10 steps before he pulls again and I stop again. I've also tried stopping when he's not pulling too. There has been a slight improvement. The only think that really works is a halti which he is so miserable wearing you practically have to drag him on a walk!! We don't even have to fasten the lead to the halti just having it on stops him pulling! I'd still rather crack it without the halti though so will keep trying ![]() |

Re: training to heel
Try changing your pace. Put her on the lead at Sit and then say Quick Quick and shoot off at your best speed so she is trotting/running along at the heel position. If she gets out of the heel position give her the Sit command immediately and you stop. Once she gets the hang of 'this is where I'm supposed to be' then you can go at normal walking pace. I would not use Heel as this sees to mean something different to her, just use Walk or Close or any other word you want.
