Next move

Hi. New to this. Just aquired a new puppy. CKCS. He is 11 weeks now. We have had him 3 weeks. He was trained by the breeder to go on paper and he is very good at this.

He is not allowed outside for another week or so when he has had his second jab.

Question: How do I move him from the paper to outside. In the garden or on walks? Should I move the paper outside or just go for broke and take him outside until he 'goes'.

Re: Next move

I remember it well! finn used to go out for ages and then come back inside so he could wee on the paper, having clearly been keeping his legs crossed till he was back inside!

some people move the paper closer and closer to the door, even leaving the door into the garden open and then putting it on the step outside, but it's a bit chilly for that at the moment!

I would move the soiled paper into the garden and show it to him out there and of course make big fuss of him when he does do it outside...

Hi Jenp. Thanks for the info. We had a CKCS puppy over 30 years ago but you forget how it all went. He died after 14 years. It was such a emotional wrench we said we would not have another one. It has taken us this long to decide to get another.

I will move the paper outside next week and see what happens.

Regards

Re: Next move

I used paper with my first puppy Toffee and it took him ages to get fully housetrained
but with Gypsy (she's nearly 12 weeks now) I decided not to use paper at all but to whisk her into the garden whenever I saw her sniffing , after meals and when she first woke up , and in the two weeks we've had her we have only had two accidents
she goes to the front door when she wants out , if its in the night she licks my face to wake me to let her out ... id never train a dog on paper again

Re: Next move

Hey, I got my Jack a week ago and they said he was paper trained, but he wasn't (surprise surprise) but anyway, all I did was took him out every hour or so, straight after food etc, and made sure as soon as he went he was allowed to go back inside in the warm, after only about 4 or 5 accidents in the first 2 days on the carpet, hes now telling me when he wants to go outside and theres been no more accidents. Hope this helps!

Kira was 9 and a half when we got Finn and I thought I had remembered the mayhem of the puppy months, but you must block them out (much like the pain of childbirth!!), because Finn would do things and everything would come flooding back - Kira had done them too and I had completely forgotten!

Re losing a pup... Kira was my first dog and celebrated her 13 birthday last Friday. I haven't yet lost one, although I know it's in the post. I can't imagine how awful it will be. You have my sympathies.

I'm hoping that a second dog will force me to get on with it, amidst my grief, and also perhaps persuade me that finn needs a mate, and therefore not precluede the possibility of another dog. But of course, all that is YEARS and YEARS away!!

Re: Next move

Hi. Thanks to all who took the trouble to reply. I found them all a great help. I have moved the paper outside now (albeit a wee bit cold) so we wait to see.

I take the point about NOT using paper but that was the way he came to us. He has his second Jab tomorrow and I am looking forward to taking him out on a lead for the first time. By the way, any tips about teaching to walk on a lead would be much appreciated.

Regards to all

Jimbo

Re: Next move

Gypsy has her second jabs on Monday , so a week after that and I can finally take her for a walk , something im dying to do , lol
i've been getting her used to the lead by just attaching it and letting her trail it around behind her indoors ... once she seemed ok with that I started taking her out into the garden holding the lead , at the moment its kinda hit and miss cos she's so used to just having her freedom out there she sometimes just stands and looks at me as if to say ' what do you want me to do' , lol , othertimes I guess she's just desparate and goes anyway

Re: Next move 2

Hi Mese. Thanks for the info. Usefull. I tried putting the lead on him (Coller on for several weeks now, no problem) but he justs sits on his bum front legs splayed out and won't move. I dont think I should drag him. He is 11 weeks now by the way.

Regards

Jimbo

Re: Next move

Thats what Gypsy did to start with , but he'll have to move at some point , lol
I def wouldnt pull him around with it ... try offering him some warm hotdog (neither Toff nor Gypsy can resist warmed up hotdogs , lol) but where he has to take a few steps to get it , and extend the distance once he gets used to it ... dont leave the lead on too long either , and always supervise when it is on , better safe than sorry
