Down Stay Problems...

Hi
Pip and myself have been obedience training for ten weeks now. When we got Pip earlier this year she had had some training but not much.

Anyway, we can now do sit stay perfectly and recall.....on lead in training, off lead on walks she is mostly good.

However, she doesnt understand down stay. She doesnt really understand down tbh. When i say down, she looks at me but isnt sure what to do. Then when I put a treat infront of her and try to ease her into a down, she will get the treat then wriggle free of the position. Last night she did actually stay in a down for about 10 seconds which was amazing, but didnt do it again!

Im finding this one really hard to master, any tips? She is a cav x toy poodle and is coming up to 1 year on 1 december.

Thanks!

Re: Down Stay Problems...

What worked for me was from sit hold treat on floor and only say down when she is actually in the right position. Archie was brilliant at this and lay down straight away to get his treat, eventually went onto just point down and now he does from voice command only.

Bramble (baby) is completely different, no way would she go down so, tip from trainer, sit on floor, one leg out in front with knee raised and encourage puppy to follow treat under your leg - so they have to crawl and are therefore "down"!! Of course, never press down on pup. Again, don't say down unless puppy is in down. Bramble will now do it without the leg (thank goodness!!!)

Hope this makes sense!
