HELP!!!!! i need urgent advice

I have a 13week old jack russell. i have brought him a few toys. Every plastic toy i give him within minuets he has chewed a hole in it and eats the plastic. Im worried because it is every time and it feels like every time i give him a toy i have to take it off him. I also think obviously a lot of people must buy these toys and full grown adult dogs must do the same thing but with in seconds so maybe its not a problem but i just want to make sure. can someone please help!! thank you.

Re: HELP!!!!! i need urgent advice

Give him something more robust. Plastic toys are pretty pointless tbh, not to mention dangerous if a dog or pupp swallows some.

Nylabones, Kongs, Stagbars etc would all be far more long lasting, but just require a little more financial outlay. Rope toys are quite popular with terriers, but as with anything, they should only be used under supervision.

Not entirely sure what you want help with though tbh.

Re: HELP!!!!! i need urgent advice

Yes I've had several puppies do the same (and some not so young!!).

Personally I would purchase Kongs, solid rubber rings, etc. They will cost more but will last much longer and are also much safer than eating bits of plastic.

Puppies do chew a lot but they shouldn't be breaking them.

Have you bought a Kong? They are fantastic and almost unbreakable. They do many varieties and the quality is always amazing.

It's harmful if he swallows pieces, as it can cause an obstruction.

Chewing is normal, but if they are destroying the toy, you need to purchase something thats much much stronger. Otherwise you risk surgery, or even worse, possible death.

Give him a raw beef bone instead. He'll chew it to his hearts content and it'll be doing him some good.

Re: HELP!!!!! i need urgent advice

Try as best as you can to stop him swallowing anything non - edible...easier said than done at times...and get a solid 'drop' command in place so he will spit out items he shouldn't have too.

If he swallows stuff you will have to go on 'poo watch'.....expanding poo means sponge has been swallowed, and poo that looks at you reproachfully as you pick it up will be the googly eyes from a toy....not that I have ever seen such things .

Re: HELP!!!!! i need urgent advice

You really need something harder for him to chew! hard to imagine a 13 week JRT - but seem to remember em as pretty small! Perhaps a nylabone would stand up to the young teeth (not that I have used one) or one of the stronger kongs most definately!

All the best

Very, some dogs get what they call a blockage, it can take them out in a metter of a couple of hours if you don't notice anything & at his age a major op ( necessary) would be quite dodgy. especially as its an exploratory op type even with the x rays.

Go for a kong and one bigger than he actually looks like he needs, you be surprised how some of these swallowing dogs get comparitivly large objects stuck in their throats, as someone said he needs to be stopped getting near anything he can swallow, if he's predisposed (maybe maybe not) to blockage even a tiny bit of paper can take him out.
