Dog becomes ignorant

Hi all, newbie here

I recently brought a dog 3 months ago(dog is now 8 months
Old, it is a cross between a jack Russel and a chiwawa, now the dog is great, very adorable and became house trained pretty quick, now I like to give her as much exercise as I can(obvious I know) and am fortunate to own my own horse to, now I like to take my dog down the yard and give her as much freedom as she wants(she is great round horses etc)

Now the problem is when she is around other dogs, if another dog is up the yard she seems to turn into a different dog, completely ignores me(won't come back, won't listen and runs off), now I know she wants to play but just won't stop to the point we all have to chase her, same if I let her off the lead in the park and she spots another dog.

Apart from this she is excellent

Any training tips on enough is enough when around other dogs.

I don't want to stop taking we up the yard

Look forward to all replies

Hi - this isn`t hard. You just need to train the dog. Start indoors, offer a tasty treat - when she comes, say come and give the reward. Repeat lots.
Then do it in other places - but only when the dog is going to come. Make it really interesting treats or toys the more you get distractions.
When you do this training near other dogs, use a line - and only call your dog when she will be likely to return - until the training is ingrained.
Training is all about repetition and reward.
I would also take your dog to classes so you and she practice around other dogs.

Ok, can I just add, if you know she will run off after other dogs/horses etc, why let her off? Obviously her recall needs work, so keep her on lead, or contained until you've got that sorted out

I once had this problem too when I first got my rescue nothing in the world was more exciting to her than another dog! However, over time and after letting her play with loads of dogs, she's calmed down and the novelty has worn off.

Does she get to play with other dogs much? It would be fantastic if she had a few friends you could let her play with and then work on the re-call when they are around...

Putting her on a long line so that she's easier to get back if she does run off might help too...

I agree, use other dogs as a distraction and call her off. Use long line initially and then just your voice. The best I have ever seen this demonstrated is with Jean Donaldson and the DVD that comes with her book. Train your dog like a pro.
