any tips for house training a chihuahua??

Hi, my puppy is coming up for 8 months and she still isn't house trained properly. When we first got her at three months we decided that we wanted her to learn to toilet outside so we didn't opt for the crate metod. That would mean that I would take her out around every half an hour to do her business. Of course she would have the occasional little accident in the home but I just got on with cleaning it thinking it would pass. At night time when we all go to bed I close her in a small room with bedding and training mat so that she can toilet there during the night, which she usually does. The problem is that during the day she still toilets around the house wherever she wants, I keep the bedroom doors closed but it doesn't matter because she will do it on the stairs, on the landing, in the living room, well you get the picture! It is driving me mad!!

We also have another dog who is 12 but luckily she was quick to learn where to do her business and we have never had any problems with her. When she needs to go she goes to the front door and whines...I know that all dogs are different and despite using the same technique for both dogs it hasn't worked with the little one.

I thought that maybe I am confusing her with the training mat at night time, but I don't know what the alternative would be. I really want her to go to the front door when she needs to go but she doesn't seem to associate the door with outside and the magic words "pee and poo!"

Any tips will be very much appreciated, thanks.

Give the house a proper clean with biological floor cleaner (sorry) to kill the scent then start again.
Take your dog out every hour. Praise when she goes. Get up in the night to take her out. Lose any pads or mats. You`re just training the dog to poop indoors. Keep your dog with you so you can spot when she`s about to go.

Hi, thanks for the quick reply

I was worried the pads might be adding to the problem, I'll take those away tonight..

I don't suppose you know of any tircks to get her to go to the door when she needs to go??

I think that will come in time once she realises that outside is the 'right' place to go.... at the moment she doesn't quite get that just yet

I agree with the post above, sounds like you need to go back to basics with her, treat her like a new puppy. Take her out every 20/30 minutes, massive praise and a treat when she goes.... sure she'll get there soon

I don't quite understand what you said at the beginning, how you wanted to train her to go outside so didn't opt for using a crate By crate training her, she would have been easier to toilet train as dogs don't tend to 'go' where they sleep so she'd be more likely to alert you when she needed the toilet (if the door was closed). I'm not sure how you'd go about crate training now she's older..... I assume the same as a puppy really, there's a sticky about it on the Dog Chat section

8 months? do what you did with your other dog. make the crate small so they cant pee.
if they do, they'll hate it. control water, to help them.
