I always gave my young ones a run of the house and left the back door (secure garden!) open. That way the dog can go out when needed.
But I can't do that at night, during the day there's no problem at all, it's just through the night.

Re: Toilet trained during the day but not at night

First of all I do not agree with the first reply you had; not all dogs love living outside..

And I apologise if I repeat what anyone else had said but I will take you through what I went through with my dog (we got him at 8 weeks, fully house trained at 12 weeks)

Out to the toilet every half an hour - an hour and after water and meals; during the day, up at 6am gradually moving that time by 15 minutes each week.

At night, we would stay up till 11pm, if he fell asleep we made sure he was awake and playing at half 10, last wee's at 10 to 11 - we'd spend 10 minutes outside watching if he was toileting. Then we'd settle him in his crate. Then repeat the process all over again.

Louie slept in the crate but was paper trained - each week we would lessen the amount of paper there was and by 12 weeks he was house trained (although we did have a few accidents - if we didn't hear him scratch at the door)

HTH.

I'm guessing this normal as she's obviously in the crate for a long period at night, but is there anything we can do to help things along? She does have a small bowl of water at night as she'd get too dehydrated otherwise, will it just improve over time?

Thanks x

Hi

We've done pretty much the same as you from 8 weeks too, except havent been able to reduce the paper as it's saturated every morning. She's in the crate after a walk, play & wee by 11pm, & is howling to get out by 6am which by then we get straight up in case she's asking to go out, but by then the papers already soiled. X

Re: Toilet trained during the day but not at night

With Bracken I use to leave newspaper by the back door which he used at night but I use to get up at 5 so I could clean up before the others got up. But he was good from about 12/14 weeks but his first wee in the morning is always a very long one without cocking his leg so I think this is why he was easy to train at night and the day. I also think if you can let the pup have a bit more space to roam around you might find it better. I do remember coming into the kitchen and finding clean newspaper one morning but he had made his bed look like a meringue in the middle of the floor and he was so proud of himself. I did laugh because he looked so cute.

Re: Toilet trained during the day but not at night

Then maybe you need to get up in the night and let her out for a couple of weeks, so bed at 11pm, get up at 3 - let her out, back to bed then out at 6am.. then gradually move from 3 to 4 and 4 to 5 then 5 to 6 and then continue on..

I do think having the other dogs helped Louie though..

Good luck (just think - at least it's not a childs nappy - they aren't potty trained till about 2 in most cases)
