Whining Dog

Hi,

Some of you may have read my previous post about Leah our 1 1/2 year old female Labrador retriever. We have made great progress with her over the last few weeks with regards to re-call, but we are still experiencing some problems with her feeding. None the less great progress anyway!

She has recently come into heat (she is probably 2 weeks into it) and she has started to whine uncontrollably some of the time, mostly at night when we are in bed. It's almost like she wants to be closer to us, but as she is not allowed on the beds she cannot physically get any closer.

I understand that its probably not the nicest of things to experience for her, but wondered if anyone has had any experience of being able to "control" this?

To top it all off we recently got a new kitten, she is a very welcoming dog and she does not act aggressive towards him in anyway. However she has been whining at him a lot (usually when she sees him). We have tried to reinforce the positive behavior with treats and the negative (whining) by a firm no! However this appears to not solve the problem.

We started off very slowly with them both, allowing them to get each other smells and then slowly over the course of a few days introducing them slowly through a baby gate. It has not been a throw in situation at all

We haven't showed the kitten more affection at all, most probably quite the opposite and we often play with Leah and stroke her when he is around.

So I guess my question or questions are .. Is the whining during heat normal? Or does anyone have any experience with a introducing a new cat to the home?

Thank you once again!

Heck yes! Also yowling, screaming and general nortiness. Plus possible nesting and outrageous flirting. And moods! Oh, the moods!

She's in season and needs to breed, so is calling all dogs in the area, to make a visit. So my guess is that this is perfectly natural

Hey,

We had imaged as much, but the problem is she whines a lot generally.. More so now as she is in heat but that can be expected.

We also think she is quite scared of the kitten, i guess this will be better overtime.

I know they are all pretty simple questions but sometimes its nice to get the reassurance that what you thought is actually correct!

Thank you!

Just don't give her any fuss orspeak to her. If she thinks she can get attention by whining she'll do it even more. Ever had a 2 year old kid who wants attention?
