Another peeing question

Hello guys.

Just bought myself a 7-week's old Beagle puppy couple days ago and even this is my second dog (first one was older when i got it) will definetely need help from profesionals who i hope to find here.

Anyway, first question is a standard one. Due to the fact that she only had one vaccination she won't be allowed to go outside for a nother month or so. Which means that she does everything at home now. We are using training pads and puppy is making a big progress - peed there three out of last four times. Every time she does it there we praise her a lot. Problem is with pooing. She only wants to do it on the carpet and its full of wet marks now. How to gradually teach her to do it on the pad as well? What is the best taktique?

Also, we are not a big fans of cage idea so i made a cartoon box she cannot get out of. Half of it is her bed and other half is a pad she already used. We keep her inside over the night next to our bed in the bedroom. It was her first night inside and we have a problem. In the middle of the night she started to cry a lot (even if she did before as well, this time was really loud). So i took her out for minute and she peed/pooed on the carpet straight away. So, the problem is that she doesn't want too poo inside her box. How do we train her? Just ignore her crying and she will do it as will have no other choice? Or maybe we should consider cage?

Very appreciate your answers in advance

P.S. When does puppy stops crying over the nights as it gets louder

Re: Another peeing question

Firstly do you have a back garden? because it is safe to let your puppy into your own back garden straight away regardless of injections.

If you do have a garden my advice to you would be to ditch the puppy pads immediately and get her going to the toilet outside, using puppy pads is just reinforcing that it is OK to go to the toilet indoors. Take her out as soon as she wakes up, after every meal, every play session and at about 20 - 30 minute intervals throughout the day while she is awake. Use a key word when she goes to the toilet like "be quick" "toilet" "wee wee's" etc. Pick one word or phrase and stick to it and use everytime she performs. When she is weeing or poohing outside as well as using the key word give her praise at the same time so she knows what she is doing is correct.

As for the crate. At this age never just leave her to go to the toilet in her own bed, she is crying to let you know she needs the toilet so she must be let out to go. Dogs are clean creatures and do not like to deficate their own bed so it would just be cruel to leave her, and remember a 7 week old bladder is very tiny so they cannot be expected to hold it all night. Puppies do not have full bladder control until about 6 months old but many do manage it much sooner. If she cries, take her outside to let her go to the toilet, and put her back in her bed with no fuss. She will soon learn that it is only toilet time and not play time.

Puppies are like little sponges and pick things up surprisingly quickly.

Good luck with everything, I'm sure she'll crack it all soon

Re: Another peeing question

Agree with Gillieworm - start taking her out for the toilet - they are very clean creatures............ During the night we used to take Rocky out every 2 hrs for the first week and then every 3 hrs, some puppies need to go out more often.
But the results where quick as within about 3-4 weeks he was sleeping through the night from 9 pm - 6 am!!

Also if he is toileted regularly during the night and he is sleeping in your room then he should stop the barking/howling during the night.

PS Can he see out of the carboard box?

Re: Another peeing question

The puppy can go out into your own garden as long as its secure and other dogs dont come into that area.

Puppies will normally not go to the toilet in there own bed. This is probably why he will not toilet in his box.

I would forget about paper or pads and take him out side to go to the toilet.
Do this every time he wakes up, eats, plays, or sniffs around.

Re: Another peeing question

Thanks a lot for very informative answers. From now on i will be taking her out of her box every time when she wakes up in the night and get her to do her things. Unfortunately our garden is not a proper garden and open for every single cat and dog in the area so i won't risk taking her outside yet. I will keep using pads instead, only i will be taking her to wee/poo in the toilet as there are no carpets

And we will consider getting crate for her as well. Probably will get one today

Re: Another peeing question

Couldn't you make a wired enclosure in your garden that you could put your pup in to do her business. I think you are making a rod for your own back by encouraging her to go indoors

Re: Another peeing question

I'm afraid it is just not possible as we share our garden with other neighbours. And as soon as she will be able to go outside we will take her out every 30 mins or so to re-train her. I know, its not easy, but we've got no other choice

Re: Another peeing question

You were really lucky to get a Beagle puppy without having a garden, we were asked over and over again by the Breeder if we had one!

I'd def go for the crate, we didn't at first which I regret, he's always had a pen but learnt to escape!

Alfie cried for a whole month... the only thing that helped was a hot water bottle and a ticking clock. It takes a lot of patience and will power but ignoring her is the best thing.

You definitely can't expect her to go to the toilet in her bedding area, at 7 weeks she won't be able to hold herself for very long. Thats quite early for her to leave her family.
