Re: digging!
I'm a big fan of redirection. As I don't have a fenced yard, I have not had to deal with fence digging. But as the owner of a terrier mix, I am quite familiar with indoor digging!
I decided that I'd encourage my dog to dig on her dogbeds (we have one in each room that I spend a lot of time in-bedroom, living room and kitchen). Whenever my dog began digging the carpets or, worse yet, the furniture , I gave her a loud AH-AH and brought her to her dog bed where I encouraged her to dig. She happily digs those poor dogbeds within an inch of their lives. Once in a great while, I hear her start to dig the carpet and just say BED. She runs like a rocket to her bed and satisfies all her digging urges there. More often than not, she does it without the command, but she does need a reminder every now and again. If you go this route, I recommend canvas or denim dog beds and well-trimmed nails. ![]() For fence digging, many dogs can be redirected to a sandbox with the proper training. I'd also consider whether an outdoor yard digger is getting enough exercise and mental stimulation, as additional exercise may tone things down quite a bit. Sadly not true in many cases I'm afraid. Mine are walked religiously twice a day plus trained most days. They also have a huge exercise paddock but two of the little dears still insist on digging up the lawn. One of them is 13 yr old next week. I personally think it becomes habit forming and needs to be addressed when they are very young. I'm too lazy and therefore have to put up with craters in the lawn. ![]() |

Louie has made a 2ft hole under our swing seat outside.. I don't mind, the gardens a mess and I have moles in the winter anyway..
If you get any tips - I would love to know.. but for now we're hoping he'll dig to Australia so we can have a holiday ![]() |

Re: digging!
Thanks for the replies, I do usually redirect if she does it in the house so I will carry on trying that
As for excersize, she is only 14 weeks old, so as much as I would love to take het on 2 hour treks, I can't she was digging outside after feeding her half her tea kibble getting her to Chase me round the garden, the other half in her kong wobbler and then playing fetch the empty drinks bottle (one of her fave toys!) For 20 mins or so so no worries on the mental or physical boredom, also I suppose as its concrete it would be classed as a yard but its a 50 x 40 foot yard ha ha I did see an episode of its me or the dog where they got a sandbox for this reason, so if she starts doing it more regularly I may get her one thanks again ![]() |
