Toddler Tantrums

This is our first puppy although my husband has previous experience some years ago. Our 12 week whippet has mad moments tearing around the room which I stop after a couple of minutes as he gets frenzied. He also demands attention sometimes, barking at us and trying rough play. We say 'No' firmly and turn our backs and stay still then occupy him with something calm like a puppy chew. Is this behaviour just normal puppy stuff and are we dealing with it ok?

Re: Toddler Tantrums

i think it maybe normal 'puppy stuff', every morning our 2 young collies will lay under the table then all of a sudden they will just get up and tear around the table seemingly playing chase, my daughter is always saying that her Japanese Spitz sometimes has 'spitz' moments when it will rush around like a mad thing (and she is 5 now). give him a kong or something to chew on, and try not to let him get carried away by barking, you seem to be dealing with it ok anyway

Re: Toddler Tantrums

It is a puppy thing some grow out of it sooner than others. Quite often when they have had a mad dash round they fall asleep. Sometimes ours used to get so excited if you banged on the floor he thought that was a great game. try and enjoy the puppy phase as it doesn't last long ( I know it seems like it for now )

Re: Toddler Tantrums

My Rocky never did this and I missed it - it's so funny when they do it - the only time he did it was a couple of weeks ago - he did it 2 nights in a row and then it hit me - I had been taking him out walking off leash and giving him lots of treats as rewards and I had been using Cheerios!!! We decided the sugar must be too much for him and stopped giving him Cheerios and we had no more mad dashes around the house!

Re: Toddler Tantrums

Thanks for all that advice! He is doing the barking/rough play less. I agree the tearing around is fun, puppy behaviour and he stops when I think it is enough. I dread to think what he would be like if he had sugar! And we are trying to avoid any 'E's or additives anyway.
