Lock me up

What "looney" stuff do you do in the name of training. I've just spent the hour after a walk sitting on the drive with Dief with a coffee. Everyone time one of the neighbourhood cats goes past I call it's name "look at that" and give him a wave. The bloke over the road drives an ambulance. I think he smells a customer.

Re: Lock me up

Apart from the usual heelwork and recall in the supermarket car park, I have spent many an hour sitting in the woods reading a book at prime rabbit time, hidden in ditches, rolled in the grass shrieking wildly, and stood still for up to 30 minutes at a time waiting for my dog to stop pulling. This dog training lark is not for the self conscious types.

Re: Lock me up

There`s the Lurking game - when you hide and your dog has to find you. Useful for sharpening recall but can be embarrassing when you`re spotted hiding in a bush in a Park.

Red face those blushing moments...

kneeling in the grass playing 'find the lost contact-lens' when there's none to be found...
that's a classic - & it often works. Aside from the occasional grass-stains on trousers, it's a good failsafe
for dogs who may go walkabout, or romp off with another dog & fail to return.

hiding for the dog to practice sniffing out a lost-person can be embarrassing - onlookers have a hard-time
believing adults who play hide-n-seek can be anything but escaped lunatics, or unemployed folks who've suffered
a nervous-breakdown, & are decompensating.

lying flat on my back to issue verbal-cues to an invisible dog is a goodie i need help for that -
a human-partner to tell me if the dog complies, & when. [it's just a test of the dog's understanding of X -
if i say 'Sara, flark!', does Sara have a clue what 'flark' is? If so, there may be some hesitance,
but no matter what orientation i'm in, or where she is relative to me, she should 'flark' ... eventually.]

We do this, we used it alot when teahcing recall to Millie. It ade her panic slightly to not be able to see us - and made her realise she needs to watch us. We hadnt tried it in a few months so yesterday my hubby threw her tennis ball around a corner (We had just walked round so knew noone was there!) so she ran out of sight - thn we legged it and hid in a bush!! Millie got her ball back then ran to find us - We could see where she dropped her ball where we were intially standing where she paniced and went into 'find owner' mode. She found us and got huge praise then we all went to find her ball for her. We got many a weird look sudenly dropping to the ground., hiding in crops / around corners! Glad im not the only one lol
