Re: Citronella Collars - Do they work???

[QUOTE=Cleo38;106142380

How do you deal with any barking when you are in the house? It may be that he has associated barking with gaining attention so carries on with this when you are not there.

How have you dealt with this previously?[/QUOTE]

Ive got a bottle filled with pebbles so when he barks in the house at cars i shake it at him - its proving quite effective but i cannot do this when im not in the house and i need to go to work!! He gets plenty of exercise and ive even taken to hiding treats for him to find when im not here..but still he barks when im not there!

That makes me wonder if you've told the full story, is this causing problems with complaints & >especially< is there any threat of reporting the nuisance to councill?

For heavens sake, why didn't make it clear it was that serious.

So, you should of course try a spray collar, your dog is in a life threatening emergency situation, if a summons lands on your mat then it's either give him to rescue, it's unlikely you would get him in one because they all have waiting lists throughout the country, what your position is, you can be given a noise abatement order, made to pay £5000, a criminal record, THEN, because you would be on a noise abatement order every single incident after that is another charge.

Your priority is to stop the barking, if you go for a spray collar then the Dynavet make is one to stay away from, returns due to not working or broken down are around 27% & as someone else said other dogs set them off as well as the slightest knock or vibration, Petsafe make a better quality one & its not as likely to go off at other noises & bumps, so theres your options on quality.

So those are your options, annoyed neighbours, especially if they have lived in peace for many years, can just clamp down without further notice, the council put monitoring devices somewhere close & thats it, the recordings support the witness complaints and to be fair, they have given you enough chances and it's aalmost inevtable they feel ignored and that this noise will continue to upset them forever, If I were living a nice quite retirement the last thing I would want are noise nuisance neighbours, peace is what they have worked a lifetime for. To them dogs dont count.

I'm not taking sides, I'm simply talking the real world, if my dog were nuisance barking it would not go more 2 maybe 3 days before I got complaints & around here they would not be as lenient as your complainants seem to have been.

If you had said in the first place it was that far gone the above is what I would have written.

Thanks for all the replies....im just getting towards my wits end now as i thought i was making progress with him. I recorded him the other day when i left the house for just 1/2 an hour and Oh my god....the barking was out of control (my poor retired neighbours) but he definatly did not look like he was anxious as he was just sat on my bed barking for all his worth. He's got a big thing with cars and so whenever one drives down our street he barks at it thinking someone is coming to visit him. Ive read lots of reviews on these collars and the general consensus is that they really do work so im in a quandry at what to do. Surely they are more humane than a shock collar (which i would never use) if a vet would recommend getting one??!!

I completely understand - I have to work as well so need make sure my dogs are ok during this period. I have no neighbours though so don't have this problem. My dogs bark alot which is good as we are quite isolated so I want to know when people are around

First off I would speak to your neighbours just to let them know theat you are trying to deal with this & aren't ignoring the problem.

Can you get any time off work to try & tackle this? Can you section him off within the house so he doesn't hear cars?
