Her recall is terrible.

When Pongo was alive Pennys recall was great i think partly down to the fact Pongos was.

Whilst in the garden she always comes back but today out on the field with no dogs about we decided we would test the water.

She sniffs, she walks ahead, she doesnt run off but she doesnt come back until she is ready to.

She loved being free and it was great that 2 dogs ran up to her and i didnt freak out and she didnt do her usual yappy come play with me bark.

How on earth do i get her to listen, she isnt naughty when she is off the lead. She stays close to us but i want her to come when i tell her too.

We are looking at leads. But i dont want her always on the Lead she loves to run free and have the wind flap her ears about.

Re: Her recall is terrible.

yep she just wasnt interested in anything but sniffing the ground. We made high pitched sound. Squeaky toy, walking the opposite direction but she was on the trail of something amazing and just had to finish what she was doing.

She wasnt badly behaved just didnt come back. Towards the end she started listening to Here. And it was nice to have a few moments where she concentrated on me.

Maybe i cant have what we saw today and thats an amazing woman who had 3 dogs all off the lead and totally focused on her. Her king charles came and said hello and then he walked off and then her dog (unsure of breed) came running towards her and she was fine. Penny was on the lead at this point and she didnt freak out and neither did i. I just relaxed and went with it.

Yes, I thought so, treats cause ignoring behaviours except with quiet biffable type dogs, treats are the biggest cause of training problems, it wasn't a hard guess, theres been a couple this morning & this week.

Re: Her recall is terrible.

So how do i get her to listen to me?
She didnt run off, she didnt charge up to any dogs even when she eye spied one at the bottom of the field. She just liked whatever smell was on the ground.

Treats actually worked for my dalmatian and i am not doing anything different. Squeaky toy, high pitched excited voice, yummy treats. She comes to me in the garden but thats obviously because the smells are all hers.

Re: Her recall is terrible.

I only recommend you use someone from The Guild Of Dog trainers, they are quite new app 3 years ago I think & the membership is completely mixed in its training approaches.

Its their rules which give you security, rule 10, if after a couple of lessons the trainer sees his/her methods are not working with your dog they are expected to refer you to a trainer whose methods they consider suitable for the dog so I would check them out first,

The Guild of Dog Trainers - Dog Training, Dog Training and Behaviour, Dog Training Courses, Dog Behaviour Courses

Rule 10
Members agree that they will not convey to their clients unrealistic expectations in the advice, action or recommendations proposed and to ensure that instances where they are unsure or unable to resolve a dog training or behavioural problem are promptly referred to a suitably qualified dog behaviour practitioner or dog trainer who has that specialist knowledge. It is incumbent on a member not to continue provision of the same instruction, training or advice to a client and their dog which is ineffective despite a genuine training effort.

This simply isn`t true. In fact it`s a little worrying that someone doesn`t understand how dogs learn.

I would say the dog has never learned recall. She probably just followed the other dog, who had. So she learned that when you called, she followed her friend. I`d start training recall from scratch, using a different word, or a whistle.
shamykebab and kat&molly like this.

Re: Her recall is terrible.

Yeah i feel really dumb now, so we have decided to look at local doggy classes and see if that helps. I do believe i need training to be able to train her better.

I managed to train Pongo no problem but we had a good dog walking community.

Re: Her recall is terrible.

Benny is the same, only comes back when it suits him so am going to start recall from scratch using a whistle.
