Greedy dog!
i have a ten month old rotweiller/bull mastiff pup, Reznor and he is the greediest dog I've ever met. I feed him Iams puppy and junior large breed dry food acording to the instructions on the back. He also gets given carrots and treats when walking. He has the occasional bone too. I knoe he is not hungry as he is growing like no-ones business. When he was last weighed around two months ago he was 36kg so i guess he will now be 37 or 38?
My problem is that I cannot eat around him at all or leave any dishes/packets in the living room if he is around. also the minute he hears anything at all drop on the floor he assumes it is food and sprints to eat it. I have tried persevering and having him in the room and trying to have a meal but he can@t seem to help himself. |

Re: Greedy dog!
I'd switch him onto an Adult dog food to be honest. That is ALOT to weigh, sounds overweight to me but with being a cross I wouldn't know.
I think he should be around 25 - 30kg? Have you wormed him recently? You could try Wainwrights, Arden Grange, Skinners Duck and Rice or Salmon and Rice, Orijen. You could also get some raw meaty bones from your local butchers as a snack for him, beef/lamb bones or chicken carcasses just for a treat ![]() |

I agree with the switch to adult food, I changed at around 6 months as Kilo was growing a bit too tall too quickly which could have potentially caused problems. |

Re: Greedy dog!
The vet reckons he will be 45kg + when fully growm so he seems to be on track.
If he jumps on the units when I'm cooking he gets put in his cage. I don't want to end up with a dog that I can't have around when going about daily routines like cooking, hoovering ect (he barks very loudly at the hoover!) I just want him to learn not to react to food, so as you say just lie down in the same room without staring at anyone who has food. He can be aggresive with treats so I try to limit them as he has snapped at me a few times when trying to take them away. He doesn't do it with normal food or toys though which just makes me think even more that it is purely greed! I'm sure it is a rotweiller trait to guard food but I need it trained out of him. Also he doesn't have a bed at the moment as all he does is chew them to peices and rip the stuffing out of them immediately! Last edited by emdnev; 14-09-2011 at 11:13 AM.. |

Give 'away' a try - it is really simple and works very well for us. For the worktops I use 'off' which works and is simple to train when I am there but I will never be able to leave food out and leave Kilo alone with it, so for that I deny him access to the kitchen. That way he isn't set up to fail or to be rewarded for his behaviour by getting what he is after. |

Ah, rotties and food...lol ![]() Yep, they will snap if you try to take away a treat! Agree with Dogless about swapping for higher value. I personally don't give Baillie a treat unless I'm going to let her keep it. Why bother? Baillie can't have a dog bed either, same issue with ripping out the stuffing - anything with stuffing MUST be unstuffed!! LOL ![]() So now, instead, we gave her an old rug to lie on and that does the trick, she's never tried to eat or play with it! ![]() Oh, and good luck! ![]() |

Re: Greedy dog!
I have 2 dogs right now: an elderly Springer spaniel and a 5-month-old black Lab.
The Labrador would eat until he burst. The Springer eats what he wants. Previously I've had a big black lurcher (quarter-deerhound) and a whippet, both dogs. The lurcher could have food down all day and would only take what he needed. The whippet was like my lab puppy - he'd eat anything on the street! I don't know if these are breed traits, but I'm told labs are famous for being dustbins. Yesterday, the vet said he's going to be a big lad and we should watch his weight. |
