Tree climbing collie....

Our (mainly, not purebred)BC pup is a year old, in the last couple of months when we walk her through the forest behind the garden she goes berserk(in a nice way!) and tears about, launching herself up the side of trees clinging on and trying to chew off the bark/short branches, we're talking 6-7ft up the trees.
She's been fed Wainwrights since about 12 weeks(puppy) and at 11 months we put her on the Wainwrights 1-7 food(200g twice a day) as she isn't growing and we thought this may calm her activity levels down. I walk her between 6-10 miles most days(all off lead so she tears about the whole walk). On days when she maybe can't get walked that far or time is scarce we let her have the run of the garden which is half an acre. Every day she gets frisbee time in the garden, I play some hide stuff games and she likes the tug of war games so she's not getting neglected.

Is this normal or will she quieten down eventually? We've been keeping an eye out for her first season and plan to have her spayed(and chipped at the same time she's out) will that make a difference?
Other than that she is a very friendly pup, obedient and a great companion.
Is this just "par for the BC course"?!

Re: Tree climbing collie....

Yes sounds about right.

You can't actually tire most Border Collies out, they will go all day and are bred to do so.

I haven't found spaying has made much difference to mine.

She probably will steady down a bit as she gets older, although some of mine have still been mad as hatters at 12 yrs old.

Do you do any form of training with her because making them use their brains is much more tiring than physical exercise.

It might be an idea to enrol at a dog training or agility class.

Re: Tree climbing collie....

How's the general behaviour? Does she heel, come to call, do as she's told, etc?

If so, it sounds like just a bit of random collie mad behaviour! One of ours (may she RIP) was the most well behaved, obedient dog you could imagine, put her anywhere near a pool of stagnant water however and that was it... straight in with all disregard for orders not to.

When she climbs the trees, perhaps she is trying to pull of a stick for you to throw for her? or maybe its just random madness.

You got a video of her doing it?! sounds hilarious!

Re: Tree climbing collie....

I had a Springer x Working Sheep Dog "M" who leaped at branches and hung on there dangling making muffled noises of frustration hoping, I suppose, to pull off a supersized stick. Very funny but maybe not good for her neck.

She did classes as soon as she was allowed and moved onto obedience and flyball when she was old enough as well. I tried different diets in case it was that but it was mostly her nature as by comparison my pure bred non KC Collie on the same food was a couch potato. M preferred swimming across the local pond to walking round and recall sometimes went out the window.

The thing about 5 and 10 mile daily walks is they exercise the body ok but the dog just gets fitter and has more stamina for behaving like a happy go lucky loon. More sedate activities where they have to think tire them out mentally without hyping them up. She might enjoy agility also. Spaying her made no appreciable difference but obedience classes did. Teaching her the word "Calm" was useful.

Unlike everyone else at her first classes who were rightly squeaking "Meggy come" in excited encouraging voices I was calm calling her or she was off into hyperdrive. She'll steady down probably in time but meanwhile I think you are going to have lots of opportunities of having fun with her.
