Re: New Labrador Puppy advice?

What a cutie

Toys depend on what you want to do with a pup, a lot of pet owners are giving gundog stuff a go, it's what they're bred to do, and instills basic obedience as well as teaching owners a bit about dog handling. If you did want to give gundog stuff a go, the best toy is a plain old tennis ball, nice and easy for them to hold and doesn't encourage biting down as squeaky toys do. People spend a fortune on toys, when actually, things like tennis balls, old leather rigger gloves, cardboard boxes etc are equally as good, pups don't care about bright colours and decorations, it's how you play with them that counts.

Pups go through a couple of phases where they tend to push boundaries, I know the 'kevin' terminology annoys the heck out of a couple of friends, but yes, that's what it's referring to basically. The first time you'll see it happen is about six months old (from memory) and your well trained pup looses recall, and forgets every bit of training. It's too easy to be complacent, training is an ongoing thing, every time I take my two out for a walk, it incorporates some form of training.

Re: New Labrador Puppy advice?

What ever you do, get the thing disciplined as early as possible! We made the mistake of taking on a rescued black labrador that was about 3 months old, and had had absolutely no training at all. Seems like we missed the boat and try as we might we could not get the thing under control.. she's now six and occasionally coming to call is about as good as it gets, she's a complete nightmare! I think there is a known problem with certain types of lab that means they can become 'rogue' dogs if not dealt with early. My mate had a similar problem with a black field lab he got for shooting. Instead of fetching the dead birds she just picks them up a pegs it as far away as possible, completely useless!!
