Sorry this is a bit gross but..

I'm just curious as to the following behaviour of Jenson..

Like any normal pup he chews anything and everything he can get his paws on, but since we've had him we've definately noticed a preference, nay, a fetish, for socks and undies, more so if they are waiting to go in the wash if you know what I mean

A very typical example of this is if my OH and I have just got back in from a run or the gym, and I hop in the shower, regardless of me even hanging my gear up Jenson will do everything he can to get his jaws on it. It's not so bad with my stuff but with the OH, cause he can be a lazy so and so, he will leave his shorts half hanging out of the wash basket and Jenson thinks he's hit the jackpot - 5 mins later if we haven't caught him in time he will chew the entire crotch out It's always the crotch of trousers, shorts, PJs etc that he does for and he really seems to enjoy himself.. that sounds so wrong lol

Any ideas or is he just a pervey dog

Very normal - those things sit closest to our skin so have lots of our 'scent' on.

Kenzie would happily chew away on my dirty underwear so I keep the laundry basket out of her reach. She doesn't chew on my socks but does like grabbing them when I take them off but quickly bores of them. I don't mind so much about this so I let her play her game with them.

Re: Sorry this is a bit gross but..

i would of thought that this has more to do with your smell than where that smell comes from, if you get what i mean ha ha
i have heard that our strongest odours (to a dogs nose) comes from our crotch and our mouths, and for some strange reason i think all dogs like licking sweaty feet something to do with the salty taste?? im not sure, but i dont think your dog is pervy, just being a dog

Re: Sorry this is a bit gross but..

Dogs just adore the smell of urine and feces, and no matter how hygenic someone is, there will still be particles that a dogs nose can detect, and these give them a huge amount of information about you, or whoevers undies, they are rooting about in.

Whilst we deem it a rather dirty habit, its a perfectly normal and natural behaviour to a dog.

Sounds like you have a an OH training issue, rather than a canine one.

Lol Tummel used to steal our socks and hide them in his crate(he never chewed them, just snuggled them) because he was too wee to get on our bed...as soon as he was able to sneak up he stopped

Re: Sorry this is a bit gross but..

It reminds me of a story.....

I board dogs in my home for people who come here for training with their dogs. Anyway, we had a spaniel coming for boarding, she'd been lots of times so was used to the routine. I took my basket of dirty laundry to the washing machine, and Sophie the spaniel picked something up and went into the garden with it..... now I forgot she'd taken something outside, my garden is an acre, so the Sunday morning I was running my agility class with 8 people, and while people are waiting their turn, they wander around the bottom of the garden in the long grass, whereupon a collie appeared with a pair of my pants, that had been found underneath the tree in the long grass... Try telling a class of people why your knickers were in the long grass in a secluded part of the garden!

They still remind me of it today and that was 8 years ago!

Wispa and Tinka both love pants... they would even pull them off the washing line so love the dirty or clean!

Re: Sorry this is a bit gross but..

8tansox that had me in stitches

I agree it's definately an OH training issue rather than the pup, but unfortunately the pup has picked things up in 4 weeks that the OH still isn't grasping after 6 years!!

It's good to know that other people's undies are under siege as well as ours, I swear he has a plethora of toys but if he gets a moment's oppertunity to snatch some undies from somewhere, he will!

Re: Sorry this is a bit gross but..

Our pup had to buy 7 new pairs of socks for my OH as I heard this groan of annoyance one morning when he realised that almost ALL his pairs of socks have holes in the bottom. Puppy just loves them. He flings them around, plays with them, likes them in his crate at night and the dirtier the better. Mind you, it would help if OH didn't leave them on bathroom floor. He also likes pants but socks are his fav....x
