lead pulling

When i take my dog for a walk round the block i always use a short lead and he walks perfectly, but when i go over the field with him i use a retractable lead so it gives him abit more freedom to run around, but lately he just keeps pulling, twice he,s pulled me over, the first time i hurt my ankle and let go of the lead, but lucky enough he came back to me,the second time i managed to keep hold of the lead,i had visions of him pulling me around, lol.i,ve stopped going to the field because he gets so excited and i,m worried of being pulled over again,i laugh it of at the time but how can i calm him down to stop the pulling.please help.

Re: lead pulling

try letting him have a bit of lead but shorten it when he pulls when he walks nicely let him have some length back its going to be a long battle but be firm and youll get there

Re: lead pulling

my dogs recall is ok when he wants it to be,i let him off the lead if no other dogs are about and he,s fine,he tends to listen more when he,s off the lead than when it,s on him.

Re: lead pulling

Find a secure area and let him off have his fav treats with you call him in a playful voice or even use a dog whistle everytime he comes back make a massive fuss of him, then let him run and play again keep doing this and his recall will get loads better.
With regards to lead pulling get a long line and walk him down the road as soon as he pulls without saying a word turn around and walk back, this will take a while but he will learn to watch you as he wont know what your going to do next so therefore he wont pull x

Re: lead pulling

Mine does exactly the same. wonderful on his short lead and pulls on long line, I've never cured it but mine gets loads of off lead.
How old is your dog? What is his problem with being loose with other dogs? If it's just exuberance, try and find someone with a dog that he can play with

Re: lead pulling

hi rona,my dog is 1 year old now,i don,t know if i can trust him off the lead with other dogs because when we see a dog out he barks and pulls to get at them and i,m affraid he might harm them.i have 2 other dogs at home and he sometimes goes for them,so we have to keep a very close eye on him at home.

Re: lead pulling

Oooh, I like that way of thinking about the dog not knowing where they are going next. My 4.5 month old Dobermann puppy is so much better on the otward journey, she doesn't pull so much but on the return journey she is a nightmare. I am using a Gentle Leader and that does help. I will try the turn around thing on her tonight

Re: lead pulling

Did the turning and going other way with mine as he was dreadful on lead when I got him at 20months, it worked with the short lead but not the long one. Mind, to start with, you are just going in circles
