11kg Beagle puppy with 48kg Rotty

Hi All

Can anyone give any insights into this behaviour between 2 dogs.

We have a 5 month old Beagle puppy and have had him for a week. He has settled in perfectly, very little crying when we leave him at night (about 20 secs then goes to his bed or chews his toys or digs in his bed), he's already learnt to come to his name, sit, and getting better everyday at lying down on command and giving his paw when asked. Also doing nearly all his wee's and poos outside, with one or two accidents. He seems very chilled, doesn't jump up when we are preparing his food (most of the time he just sits and waits)wasn't fussed when we took him to the vets at the weekend and the vet actually commented on him being such a calm beagle. Please don't mistake this as Milo the beagle being depressed or anxious or scared as he loves to play and is not in his shell at all, and is very inquisitive - he just seems a very well balanced dog who knows that we are in charge.

We introduced him to my wifes mothers rottveiler and he is a big big dog, but is immaculatly behaved and does exactly as he is told. as the big daft dog came in Milo literally poo'd himself!!! (but he is a puppy and still has the odd accident) but after the initial shock the dogs started sniffing each other and exploring each other and Milo didn't seem intimidated at all by the massive dog. Infact he grew very weary of his attentions (sniffing between his legs) that Milo actually barked (we've only heard him bark 3 times) and jumped up at the rotty's neck as if trying to bite it. The big rotty shied away and didn't react. then they both settled down, seemed to have a bit of a play and the beagle became totally placid around the big dog and took it all in his stride.

the next day we took Milo round to the Rottys home to see if it would be any different being the Rottys domain. they just sniffed each other. When the rotty became too much for Milo, Milo had a go at the rotty and the rotty backed off. Milo was then very confident to steal the rotty's toys and actually fall asleep in the rotty's bed - and when they played tug between them the rotty dropped his end after 10 secs!!!

Now the question is - Is milo's reaction aggressive and something that needs to be worried about or was he just saying "alright stop pestering me!"

Re: 11kg Beagle puppy with 48kg Rotty

This sounds like normal puppy behaviour to me and if the rottie is not so dominant yours will soon tellhim if hes had enough. They do this from an very early age. Im sure if the rottie wanted to tell him off it would have. It sounds to me that they will get on fine. If there was any imediate aggression you would have known straight away. As your dog is still young hes probably being let to get away with more from the rottie. Your probabley find they will become good friends.

Re: 11kg Beagle puppy with 48kg Rotty

Taking him to his first class tonight! Should be fun and interesting! Fingers crossed he's not bottom of the class.

He's already mixed with other dogs and cats as he came from proper Beagle breeders and there were lots of other beagles, plus they had a couple of cats and they had kennels for other breeds of dogs so he seems very relaxed with all sorts.

Socialising is the key to a well balanced dog generally. Good luck with puppy class im sure hell do you proud. The beagle is normally very social in nature i think there lovely. The fun bit it the recall training when the catch a scent and the nose goes down and there off.
