Lightbulb pheromones: stress, sex, & behavior

in dogs -
Pheromones soothe stressed out dogs - 26 April 2004 - New Scientist

there is one WHOPPING error in the 1st sentence: DAP does not 'evoke puppyhood' & shame on the author for that;
this isn't Proust & his madelaine over a cup of Grandma's tea; DAP has distinct physiological FX.

the rest of the article, however, is very good & worth reading.
from the research in an animal shelter:
Quote:
Plug-in diffusers continuously released the airborne molecules to 37 dogs, while a control group of 17 dogs
received none. A graduate student, unaware of which dogs were exposed, then studied the dogs' behaviour for a week.

The DAP dogs barked less frequently & more quietly than the control dogs, & showed more interest in strangers
who approached their cages. Sound meters registered an overall peak barking level of 80-decibels
for the dogs inhaling pheromones, compared to highs of 100-decibels in the control dogs.

The DAP dogs 'tended to be relaxed & interested in their external environment, suggesting DAP
was having a calming effect,' says Natalie Waran, an animal behaviourist at the University of Edinburgh,
who oversaw the research of graduate student Elaine Todd. 'That's what it's supposed to do, but it hasn't been
tested on a large number of dogs in such a stressful environment.'
this comment is also interesting -

I Was Amazed At Quickly It Worked

Miss Behavior's Family Dog Training - Dog Training, Obedience School - Nanaimo, BC, Canada

I run a B-&-B for Wee Dogs. I placed a pheromone collar on one of my 14 long-weekend house-guests
who tends to get overexcited & barks a lot. What was remarkable was the effect that it seemed to have
on all the dogs. Everyone seemed to settle down & the atmosphere was definitely more relaxed.

Feliway Pheromone and Cats - Learn about using Feliway® for aggression, urine marking and stressed out cats
BTW i do not use Feliway-spray 'only where the cat marks' - i put it where i think the cat CHEEKS, or should
be expected to head-butt & cheek-rub: happy places, resting areas, edges of the sofa to pass by, etc.

i just found this one -

interesting to me as i had some side-FX from heavy exposure to DAP.

Question odd comment re Feliway

i was very surprised to see this -
Quote:
"I purchased and tried Feliway many years ago... must have been when it first came out here in California.
I found that it didn't work at all. I have a multi-cat household and it just didn't work. The most it did was put me off
a bit as it does have an odor & if you're sensitive to odors or have allergies to scents, this isn't
a good product to be using."

- J.Z.
- with the 'multi-cat household', i would lay dollars to donuts she's got problems with marking
[especially spraying urine] & probably aggro, as well: cat-fights or growl & hiss-fests, hiding cats
upset by tension or who are being stalked by others, etc. THAT's why it had no discernible effect, IMO -
many folks with 6, 9 or a dozen cats simply refuse to recognize that cats aren't cattle; once U reach
a certain number, at least a few of the residents will be permanently unhappy.
the only way to solve the problem[s] is to reduce the feline population.

- Feliway has no odor.
it's a pheromone, not a scent; her cats may spray the walls & furniture, or decorate the floor with feces,
but that's not the Feliway.

- it's 99.9% ALCOHOL.
the only active ingredient is the pheromone; the only INactive ingredient is the alcohol, which is a carrier.
there's nothing else in it - no colors, perfumes, preservatives, nada.
