Re: Borders Books is closing; i pigged out...

I'm all quiet on the reading front; I have a long list of books I want but I can't justify buying them at the moment with financial issues going on. (And I can't borrow... I have to own them, just have to). I have read Inside of a Dog though, loved it.

Unhappy found an error of fact...

i'm a bit bummed; Horowitz says that
'dog's eyes don't open for two or more weeks, whereas wolf pups
open their eyes at ten-days old.'
[page 42]

yet when i cross-check, dog-pups open their eyes BETWEEN 10- & 14-DO.
wolf-pups open their eyes BETWEEN 12- & 15-DO.
does that sound like no difference to U? it does to me. she goes on to make this trifling, even imaginary difference
into a Grand Canyon-sized chasm between dom-dogs & wild-wolves, which i think is really over-stretching.

why the spread among pups, even in one litter?
because siblings can easily be 72-hours apart in gestational age; possibly even 96-hours or more apart.
standing-estrus & fertile days average 3-days to 4-days; implant can occur thru the entire 4 to 5-days,
as sperm can also live long-enuf to encounter eggs moving down the Fallopian tube 24- to 48-hours
after ejaculation.

Miklosi says that cocker spaniels open their eyes around 14 days after birth but that only 11% of fox terriers have their eyes open at this time. I think there is quite large breed variation between opening of the eyes (and opening of the ear canals, and between the two developmental stages as well).

I also have found (on the Internet) that wolf cubs open their eyes around 12-15 days old, not leaving the den until 3 weeks of age.

What page in the Horowitz book does she say that, Terry? Whilst I liked her book, I did find that I disagreed with some things she talked about. I should really read it again.

On another note, I have just ordered 'Controlled Unleashed' (a long time in waiting!).

i don't have much in the way of breed-specific data, just broadly that eyes can open across a 7 to 10-day
age range, from a low of 10-days to a high of 21-days, but averaging 15-days-old.
