Biting Puppy

Hi all,

We have just brought home a gorgeous Pomeranian-Chihuahua puppy and he enjoys biting - A LOT.

I have read a few threads on here but really would like some info on how to stop him doing this,

I try saying no and turning my back on him but he doesn't seem to get it, is persistence the key or should i be looking at water sprayers etc...

he's only 6 weeks old so i don't want to be too hard on the little guy, but at the same time I don't want him thinking he owns the place.

thanks in advance

chris

Re: Biting Puppy

He sounds maybe as if he has left his mum too soon? as far as I know mums and fellow pups are the main teachers at this young age.

That said..he is with you now

Have you tried the loud yelping noise every time he bites? I think that replicates the messages he would get from the other pups if he over stepped the mark

Re: Biting Puppy

i was worried it might be that, I will try the yelp and see if he cares that he is hurting me.

another quick question, is it best to have the crate where it will eventually be (in the kitchen) or is it ok to have it in the bedroom for a few weeks until he gets used to it?

Re: Biting Puppy

I dont think there is a right or wrong way with that.

When our Lhasa was small his crate was always in the kitchen, this is because it came with the dog and was far too big! I couldnt have taken it upstairs if i wanted too!

My personal opinion is that it depends on your lobg term view...mine being that the dog remains downstairs and doesnt come upstairs. In that way it would be unfair to have pup upstairs and settled in his crate then expect him to stay downstairs when he is older.

Our Leo was happy downstairs on his crate, although he was 16weeks when we got him which obviously would make a difference from a 6wk old.

have you any pictures?

Re: Biting Puppy

If he had still been with his litter brothers and sisters this is how he would have been behaving playing and learning now - the difference being that the mum and litter would have kept him is his place - he doesn't know he is biting too hard - as someone else has said i fear he left his breeder too soon - BUT - no major problems - just try not to encouragew it with playing - and just a firm no sould suffice during this early stage
regards
sue

Re: Biting Puppy

Soooo Cute, don't know if this helps but my little monster/angel is really into play biting and I use a combination of yelping and walking away. I try yelping 1st (f he is in silly mode this doesn't always work) next If he keeps nipping I get up,walk away and totally ignore him (this has worked so far).
