Noisey puppies!!

Since yesterday two of my puppies out of five have been getting beside themselves and haven't stopped barking, crying, whinging! They have been at it for nearly 2 hours this morning and I don't know what to do. They aren't happy at all and I don't think my neighbours will be either!
I have removed mum from them and I am wondering if its that? The reason for this is they are 6 weeks old and I want Mum's milk to dry up and for her to start putting the weight back on instead of looking like a rescue dog, bless her. They can't be hungry as I have seen them eating.
Any ideas?

Re: Noisey puppies!!

Hi, it could be a number of thing really.
They could be pining for mum if you'v recently took her away, especially if you didnt wean them gradually.
Its like having a new born baby. Just go through a list of things that could be upsetting them.
Check your feeding the right amount and at the right times as they might still be hungry.
I usually feed mine a puppy milk after each feed to compensate for the lack of mothers milk.
Check theyve been wormed correctly.
Make sure theyre warm, plenty of clean bedding / blankets etc..
You could also try a hot water bottle wrapped in a blanket. I find my pups love this in the winter.
Also try adding a few toys to keep them ocupied, they might be bored!
I hope this has helped a bit if you hadnt already thought of these things.
Let us know how you get on.
Best wishes.

Re: Noisey puppies!!

I find that the mum knows when to wean her pups and will begin to limit her time with them. The pups probably still need her occasionally at 6 weeks. Is the mum happy to be separated from them? Let her have a few minutes with them but be able to jump out of the pen to get away from them when she wants to.

Re: Noisey puppies!!

Mum doesn't want to be with them. I let her in yesterday and she didn't want them to suckle her and wanted to be away from them.
I have done it gradually keeping her away.
They are warm and they are eating.

Re: Noisey puppies!!

Its funny, some bitches tend to know when its time to wean their pups.
What about a few chews? I usually cut up some of these pedigree twist things so they can have a bit each.

Re: Noisey puppies!!

She likes to see them and play with them but when she goes to them they go mental and want to suckle but she doesn't tell them not to and just walks around with them attatched to her!
They are 6 weeks and I gather they shouldn't still be suckling?

Re: Noisey puppies!!

Now is an ok time to stop them feeding from her. I think at this stage they will just make her sore if theyr dangling from her. It takes teeth to grip on really well! I would suplement her milk with a puppy milk until they go to their new homes tho.

Re: Noisey puppies!!

We let ours suckle the bitch till she wanted to stop (about 9 weeks) they stood to suckle as well as lying down. I understood this to be part of the balancing process that mom teaches her pups. She was happy to let this happen and we fed them meals as well....happy contented pups and mom!

Re: Noisey puppies!!

i second what bredakim has said, this is what we did when we had a litter, also we found the pups made more noise as they got older as they didn't like being confined.
we had them in the kitchen and we penned them into one half of it behind a board that was too high for them to escape from but low enough for mum to go into to feed them occasionally, we thought this would also make it easier for us to clean up after them but by 5 weeks they were walking in the mess (i did have the puppy training pads down too) as they were bigger and taking up more space, they cried and cried to get out to us so we pulled the divider down, once they had the run of the kitchen they were a lot happier and quieter and it was actually easier to mop up 2 or 3 smaller puddles or deposits than cleaning up one big mess, we also then opened the back door so they could go out to do their business and they were all going out into the garden to do their business by about 6 weeks. feeding time was better this way too as they saw us preparing their meal and they used to sit in a line behind whoever was preparing their dinner at the sink and wait and then they would trot behind us to the other side of the kitchen or out into the garden for their food rather than knocking it out of our hands as we tried to put it down amongst them in the pen, by the time they left us they were more or less toilet trained and quite laid back. loved having them, shame we couldn't keep them all.

Re: Noisey puppies!!

Tilli 121 - that sounds as though the puppies had a wonderful start in life. Did you get any feedback from the homes that they went to?
