Re: severe reactivity: sound, sight, move, proximity, etc.

A friend of mine has a highly reactive dog, whose trigger is other dogs. It starts at about 15 foot.

His reaction is extreme. I have walked him thinking that a different energy down the lead would help.... It doesn't.....

Nothing will distract him. He screams and dances and nothing can be done.

He is not aggressive and mixes well with my dogs, in controlled situations. His energy levels are very high and as such he cannot be off the lead, even with my own dogs, because he will not leave them alone and forces a reaction.

He is not aggressive and is ok when he gets to the other dog. But as a large staffy x, people are not willing to let him approach their dog (understandably)

My friend rescued this dog approx 6 months ago and is doing all she can. She has attended training classes, worked with a behaviourist, but it's not made any difference.

The dog is just unable to control himself with a dog gets within 15 feet.

Reading this article about calmatives, how would they work in this situation? what calamatives could be used?

Help would be gratefully received to help her and her dog.

Re: severe reactivity: sound, sight, move, proximity, etc.

I found this quite interesting as one of mine, Adam, is very reactive towards cats. He is ok if he can get to them and they stand still, he either ignores unfamiliar cats or grooms the cats at home but he goes nuts if there is one on the fence in the garden. To the point where he will bark like crazy at the fence and if one of the other dogs is out he will run back (from one end of the garden to the other) just so he can grab them round the neck, then run straight back to the fence!!
Thankfully he doesnt hurt them at all but it seems like he has to get the adrenaline out somehow and so he just goes for the only available target.
