pls can anyone advise about dog hair. My lab has started to molt and everthing is thick with black hair - its been going on for about 3 weeks now - he is 6 months old and huge (looks fully grown but the vet says he has a long way to go yet). He is also still chewing and destroying everything in his path - will this ever subside. This is our first dog and to be honest I am getting to the end of my tether - its worse than having a new borne in the house!

Re: hair loss
I'm really sorry but my black labs and my mother in laws spend 99% of there time molting.
As for chewing it does normally get better with age and exercise. Labs are working dogs and need something to put there brain too, try taking him to puppy classes and you can find a good one in your area by going on the kennel club website and looking up clubs that they approve. I would be worried about rappid growth but if he is growing big but slowly try not to worry too much you do get the odd giant lab. At six months he is ok to start having two good walks a day but build them up slowly or you can damage his joints etc. My labs have all been mad till the end they have to be one of the best all round breeds of dogs, i'm collie mad as i work them but i do hold a very big soft spot for labs and will always have one my boy at the min is 10yrs and mad he has damage to his back leg through working all his life when i retired him he got very down so now does oap agility, he is still mad and naughty some times but the chewing stopped as he grew up he did eat the hole of our down stairs loo as a 6month old when he managed to lock him self in one night! including the toilet seat lol. So really what i'm saying is hold in there and get someone to help you train him but sorry the molt thing never goes away i always get more hair out of my lab then my collie's say if i got one bush full of a collie i would get 5 out of my lab god only knows how!! lol Sorry for going on hope there is some thing that helps a bit in there ![]() |

Re: hair loss
Hi,
I have a labrador and he's 12 now and i have to say he moults 365 days a year, my house is always covered in hair and i need to hover 2 a day every day. As for the chewing yep mine did that and was still chewing till he was about 1 1/2, Sorry i can't help but remember he's still a baby at 6 months old so he will chew some things and as for the moulting well that's just part of having dogs, lol. |
