Question Puppy aggressive with bones only?

Puppy about 10 weeks old gsd mix. She's active, playful, and healthy but start to be aggressive towards bones. With food bowls there's no problem, I can remove them without her saying anything, but when I give her a big meaty bone she'll take it to her spot and munch on it, and if I get too close she'll start growling. This definitely has to stop since it can be a much bigger problem when she grows up. I've looked for articles on the internet but there weren't much help, not too good advices. Anyone knows a technique that you used and worked? Would be highly appreciated, thanks.

Re: Puppy aggressive with bones only?

It won't be a quick fix. It takes time. The main thing is not to try taking it off her etc. That will only make her growl more because when you come near she does get it taken off her - what she doesn't want. Don't tell her off for growling either, she'll stop growling and go straight to the bite then. You'd be taking away her warning system.

I have exactly the same problem with my 10week old GSD. Puting the plan into action on his next feed

I've got a link on the laptop (on the phone right now). Will send it to you in the next hour. It's a good article and explains everything really well. It's for raw feeders too so very relevant.

Here is the scenario...

You have been at work all day, you have worked hard and your starving.
Someone cooks you your very favourite meal EVER. You start tucking into it and then it gets taken away from you. How would you feel? Upset? angry? determined to protect your next meal?

Your puppy thinks these bones are the yummiest food ever so is guarding them.
The only way to remove something that is being guarded in this way without repercussions of reinforced behaviour is to replace and remove.

Teach your puppy that they will always get something just as nice in return.
Have two bones out for instance, when the puppy drops the first bone say drop and good boy and give the second bone. Your puppy will soon learn you will never remove anything without it being replaced

I can recommend the book 'Mine!' by Jean Donaldson for gaining a good understanding of resource guarding and what can be done to manage it.
