Dottie Dog BT is on a distinguished road
Unwanted stair climbing behaviour

Hi all,

Our BT is now 5 months old and doing everything we ask of her in training and she's a pleasure to be around.

We also have two cats that for the time being have the upstairs of our house to themselves which is protected by a stair gate as we do not want Dottie upstairs at all.

Both cats and dog have almost accepted each other although they will probably never be best of friends and we want to remove the stair gate to give the cats a free run of the house again. The only problem with this is that when we open it Dottie tries her hardest to climb the stairs. We are using a 'back' command when we go through and she's understanding that but if we leave the gate open and we're out of site she will without hesitation go upstairs. She knows this is wrong because as soon as she can hear or see us coming up she immediately comes down with tail between her legs.

Can any of you offer any advice/ tips/ techniques for ways to stop her from having the temptation to climb them?

Thanks in advance.

Re: Unwanted stair climbing behaviour

If it was me I'd just keep the stair gate in place. Any cat worth it's salt can jump over a stair gate without problems.

Re: Unwanted stair climbing behaviour

Use a stairgate. I took in a dog who`d been `trained` not to go up stairs and for months had to carry her up and down the 3 steps into the garden because she was scared to use them.

Re: Unwanted stair climbing behaviour

I have seen these: Bettacare Pet Gate with Cat Flap | Tall Stair Gates at Babysecurity

I've never used that website BTW so it isn't a personal recommendation, I just came across the gates with cat flaps in looking at normal gates.

One of my cats is fine with that but the other is now getting old and sometimes struggles to even pull himself up on our bed so unfortunately that can't be an option.
