Smile Sleeping At Night - Advice Needed!!

Hi there, just looking for a bit of help,

our puppy is 9 weeks old, we have had her a week now, the first night she slept in her own bed but kept waking up to see we were still there but settled again quickly, since then she has slept in the bed with us.

I am wondering if anyone has any advice on how to get her to stay asleep in her own bed? As I feel that its best for her when she's older.

I don't mind if its in the bedroom with us because I feel she would cry all night if it was in another room.

Thank You x

People like crate training their pups for that very reason. The crate becomes a safe secure "den" which can be gradually moved out of the bedroom and eventually downstairs.

A good crate has benefits for travelling to, may prevent car sickness for example. See DSD Article - Home Alone - suggests crate & chew toys for other reasons to prefer them.

Encouraging good behaviours, whilst consistently avoiding practise of bad alternatives leads to extinction of the bad. So if dog sits 6/10 times it doesn't sit 4/10 times, encouraging with the right rewards (positively-reinforcing) enough for 9/10 times means it now fails to sit only 1/10 times, sit 10/10 means...

If there werent really any problems with the pup sleeping in their own bed - why have you let them sleep in your bed since?

If you truly want the pup to sleep in a dog bed or a crate, then I wouldn't allow them to share the bed as you're confusing them as to where they're meant to sleep.

Indeed… It’s best to keep them on their “den” for them to realize their bed and their master’s lair. Try to keep the dog’s bed at a distance. If you’re quite worried about your dog crying all night, you can keep the distance near from the start, and gradually increase it as time pass by.

Re: Sleeping At Night - Advice Needed!!

When we had our first pup we bought him a 'Heatbeat Pillow' by Petstages and every time they lie on it it beats to simulate still being with their litter mates/ mum.....my pup loved it and He never cried at night !! You can get them off EBay. I have just bought another one for my new pup!
