bad habits

Bobby is a 9 week old lakeland x jack russel ( though daughter says x patterdale)

As expected EVERYTHING to Bobby is to chew, bite, pull, jump at, run off with.

He is often causing someone to shout 'OWWWWW, get off my foot'

Any advice how to help him learn that swinging off humans zips, clothes, feet, noses etc is not acceptable behaviour, and playing cutely with the many toys available is?
And, when we humans hold the end of long ropey thing toy its the other end he should chose, not the facilitators hand?!

SEE! He is now having a run around the room with the toilet training pad!

Re: bad habits

I think it takes a bit of time for them to learn what they can bite (definitely now humans) and what they can and like you said they often grab at the other end of the toys (wait til their teeth get sharper ) - we just shout "ouw" when he bites us and get up and walk away from him - he soon learned and now it's only accidental biting (when he goes for the wrong bit of the toy and gets your hand instead!)

I would just remove everything possible from his level that he likes to chew and make sure you rotate his toys so he doesn't get bored - just takes time though

Rocky used to run away with our slippers and we just kept telling him no and now he never goes near them........... wish i could say the same for my ugg boots - he has a fascination for them!

This should help:

The Bite Stops Here

With regards to directing Bobby's chewing toward appropriate toys you'll need to puppy proof all rooms he has access to. In a puppy's eyes anything on the floor belongs to them

So only leave a few safe chew toys on the floor while your puppy is growing, and then as he gets older you can slowly leave certain items like trainers etc on the floor but be ready to direct his attention away from the trainers on to a toy if necessary, and praise when he gets it right.

As for puppy pads, is there a reason you are toilet training him this way? Crate training would be better, (puppy's don't like to soil their den), and just give Bobby plenty of opportunity to go outside to do his toilet.

A crate is also a great management tool in teaching appropriate chewing; when you are not able to supervise Bobby's explorations around his new home, you can leave him in his den-like crate with a few kong chew toys.

Re: bad habits

Bobby is crate trained, the puppy pad is there for times he is out when I am in.
He uses the pad occasionally, the back door is always open... tho he prefers company when toiletting,,,,, got me trained then!
Should i not have a puppy pad?
As to rooms, he only had access to the dining room (with crate in), the kitchen, and out to the garden.

Re: bad habits

Thank you the link posted 'the bite stops here' is a very informative one.
We have gone through it as a family, empowering my son with confidence!

Bobby, on the other hand didnt take any notice so we are working together with him!
