Over excited when he sees a certain dog

I've been using the 'sit and look at me' when he sees another dog. It has been working well. The only time it doesn't work is when he sees a dog that he has played with. When the other dog is off lead it comes up to mine and mine enjoys the play. When he is on lead they have the same technique of getting their dog to sit. Mine barks continually as soon as he sees the other dog and it is difficult to get past. I can't use the sit command and wondered what else I should do. As soon as he goes past he walks to heel again and I know it is just excitement as he wants to play. Thanks.

Re: Over excited when he sees a certain dog

We also use the 'sit and look', but more for people than other dogs, especially scary men!

Sometimes we can walk by other dogs but mostly ours wants to have a sniff and say hello before moving on.

If this is a dog that yours gets along with then maybe you should let them have a sniff before moving away. You don't mention if you let yours off the lead to play with the other dog, or if it's the only one off the lead? If you don't have a problem moving on after they have a short play, then perhaps it would be easier to let them meet and then move on?

Hope that helps some

Re: Over excited when he sees a certain dog

Thanks. I'd let them play, but they go to my old trainer and since then they have stopped letting him. I think he gets out of control if he plays too long, so I keep mine on lead just in case. Last time we were both doing the 'sit' and going nowhere! I need to be able to get past though as mine barks and sets other dogs off.

Hmmm...

Sorry for not being much help! What happens if you try to keep walking?

Don't worry-I appreciate the response. If I keep walking he barks continually and pulls to get at him. This will go on for as long as he can see him, which is a while.

Re: Over excited when he sees a certain dog

Hopefully someone will come along with good advice on this one!

All I can offer is maybe try distraction - but I do know how hard that can be with a stubborn dog!

Good luck

sounds like it is just over excitement, if the other dogs a bit of a live wire and gets exciteable too then they will just bounce of each other and wind each other up. Have you tried a squeaky toy in stead to re-direct and get his focus? Skinneeez got good responses in training, they are flat, easy to grab hold and carry Skinneeez if you want a look. They have squeakers in them too.

I've seen something similar and he likes his cuddly toys, so will definitely get one. Thanks.

Dont know if you have tried the primula cheese in a tube trick? You can get the ones with bits of ham and things in them too. A lot of dogs get obsessive after you squeezed a bit out trying to get the rest out of the tube licking it like mad. That was another big hit in training too. So if you havent tried it yet may be worth a go.
