Did I do the right thing?
My dog "Japanese Akita" who has had knee surgery at the age of 13wks due to a broken elbow, is now 18mths and although she has had alot of interaction with other dogs she can sometimes growl at them to warn them of her leg if they start to jump on her. Due to this I keep her on a lead mostly! as she cant really run long distances anyway due to the metal plate in her leg.
Anyway today I took my Kitti for walk on the field near my home as I do 3 times a day, and let her off the lead for a little run. I saw these two dogs approaching her called her back at put her on the lead (long lead) asap. They were barking and snarling and one ran off crying when my dog starting growling back. I then turned to walk away and this white westie appeared and jump at my dog which she then pinned it down on the floor and held it by its neck. I pulled her off and ran over the the lady to see if the dog was ok.... The lady was saying her other two dogs are very aggressive towards other dogs but the westie isnt. I told her to check her dog over to make sure it hadnt been injured. My dog has never bitten and even when she has been bit in the past she never retaliates. Anyway, the lady said oh the dog is fine! and I was about to walk away when I saw a small speck of blood. I told the lady and she checked it out and applied pressure to it with a piece of tissue. I gave her my mobile number to let me know how the dog is later - and I didnt get any phone call or text later on that day. When I got home I noticed my dog (which I didnt check with her being the bigger dog - THEY always get the blame and you feel daft checking your big dog) had two incisor marks on her jowl. I applied barrier cream and let my dog to it. This morning I got a text saying her dog had been bleeding alot over night and she had taken it to the vets. Do I have my insurance details? I replied and said my dog had two bite marks also and that I doubt my insurance will cover anything as it seems it was an accident and not an aggressive attack. I said I will call my insurance tomorrow to seek advice as its a bank holiday and they arent there today. She replied back and said her dog had to have an injection, antibiotics which amounted to £57.70 and that she would need to watch the dog over the course of 5 days incase there are any effects due to the "crushing"???? I rang the lady and said I was alarmed at her text - what did crushing mean? She said your dog had mine by the neck and this can cause a crushing effect to the dog and other problems. She said there are now two bite marks on her dogs neck. She said that with my dog being a "husky" (which it isnt) its bitten her dog due to it being bitten itself before - thats what her vet told her. I am very confused ![]() What should I do??? My dog has been bitten numerous times and I have never asked anyone for insurance details? My dog is a stud and a pedigree and she was bitten once and her nose is now scarred and i have never taken her to the vets with a bite or had antibiotics. I have extra cover in my insurance incase my dog is bitten my insurance covers it. |

Re: Did I do the right thing?
Hmmm.... Just dont see why I should have to speak with my insurance company - the amount of times my dog has been bitten and Ive NEVER got anyones insurance details???
I will be taking my dog to the vets tomorrow to get her checked out but I very much doubt I will be contacting this lady about vet bills? Most of the dog walkers know my dog and they say she is very placid and laid back. I would really like to know what "crushing" means? Last edited by MichelleKitti; 30-05-2011 at 11:10 PM.. |

Re: Did I do the right thing?
As far as I know if your dog is on a lead, it is therefore classed as under control. If the westie wasnt and came up to your dog, and the owner didnt try or couldnt recall it then technically hers wasnt. Also knowing her other two dogs are dog aggressive they shouldnt have been off lead so they were not under control either. It does seem odd that she didnt contact you until the following day either or what I understand from your post. However without witnesses its still going to be your word against hers.
Your going to take your dog anyway, so the details will go on her record. I dont know if you just plan to pay or claim on your insurance? I would then either phone her or wait until she contacts again and ask for her insurance details and say you are claiming for your dogs injuries. Yours is likely to be more anyway, she may just forget it. Otherwise speak to your insurers and let them sort it all out.

Re: Did I do the right thing?
I dont understand where her other dog came from, and it was me who rang over the field to her and her growling/barking dogs (not the westie) the other two..... and asked how her dog was and if there were any marks on it - if it wasnt for me gasping at the blood on the dogs neck she would have been none the wiser.... My mother said your dog will be down at the vets now as being agressive and will get put down
I am so worried. You are correct the lady didnt contact me till this morning and the incident well the "crushing" as she called it, happen yesterday at 3pm. I stayed up till turned midnight worried about the dog but didnt get any message or text. I didnt plan on paying for her dog or claiming on my insurance for her dog, I gave her my number to let me know how the dog was out of concern. Many times my dog has been bitten and Ive never had a sorry/phone number or anything?? I am still very confused at what her vet meant by "crushing" and that Huskys always attack other dogs once they have been attacked? Even though my dog is an Akita I would still like to know how true that is - I know this vet and he is absolutely ridiculous... and not very good at his job. I could imagine him saying let your dog have a litter it will do her good.

Re: Did I do the right thing?
Bit confused, what dog attacked your dog and what dog did yours pin down
the one that attacked yours? and is this the one she is saying she is trying to claim for? If the dog that was injured is the one that ran over when yours was on a lead and attacked yours and got bitten in the process in retalliation from your dog I cant see how she can claim anyway.

Quote:
By crushing, I assume he means that as well as the puncture wounds the trachea or windpipe could have been crushed, in all honesty though if there had been any crushing injuries, I would have thought that it would have become apparent almost immediately, it doesnt look like the dog was taken until almost 24hrs after the event anyway. I should imagine there would have been breathing problems or pain on manipulation of the neck on examination none of which she has mentioned so it seems highly unlikely to me. With any bite injuries vets give antibiotics anyway, as the mouth and teeth are full of bacteria so its just precautionery to cover them and avoid any bacterial infection while the wound heals.
