Re: Walking/Training session or just walking
i teach training and walking separately for some dogs, together for others.
it depends on the dog.
for a dog that is very willing to listen, very active, i normally separate. the reason being you just want a dog to focus on one thing. walking, following you, hiking etc. With an active dog, trained well, they will 'push you' to play with them or want you to interact with them. I don't want that if we are going for a hike.
i would want them for that when i am training them in a particular situation, and i would cue them for a training session. that way, i can help them distinguish what time is for what... imagine taking your dog out for a night wee, and they want to train with you, play with you, play fetch at midnight... =/
again, it's for a SPECIFIC type of dog, not all dogs.
do i tell these dogs to recall during a walk, YES definitely. but this eventually moves towards an obedience command rather than 'training' during a walk.
training, i believe should be done in controlled situations (or as much as) - i know it can be difficult given people's schedules/environments etc. but we should do the best we can.
