Re: introducing pup to older dog

Both my last two came as pups when I had two existing ones. I find its better to introduce them on neutral ground and bring them in together rather than just bring the pup in so it just appears on her patch, in fact Ive done it with all the new additions over the years.

It could well be Mavis will take to it like a natural, when I had Laska still when Kobi came, she was fabulous with him, he jumped straight on her back and she immediately told him that wasnt acceptable didnt hurt him just whipped her head round and gave him a verbal and a face full of teeth no contact I add. From then on he showed her respect and was happy to be with her and she became like his mum. Daisy on the otherhand walked away and ignored him, but then made the mistake of entertaining him in play with no boundaries so he would carry on merciless and didnt stop when she did try to tell him. So I would just watch the initial reaction, hopefully Mavis will give him boundaries and set the standard, otherwise I would say, help with the boundaries otherwise.

I have also give them their place to eat from day one, and discouraged trying to shove their heads in the others bowl and found that helps. Dont overfuss the pup when he first comes, if he is much smaller then dont leave them unsupervised in case they can get hurt unintentionally in over excited play.

A lot of this you would probably do anyway.

thanks...I have read about introducing them on neutral ground...just having a problem thinking of somewhere...would my parents back garden be classed as neutral? Mavis has been in the house quite a lot, but not in their garden

You are limited with an unvaccinated pup, I was lucky with Nan as she was fully vaccinated so we could walk them. I should think the garden would be ok especially if Mavis doesnt spend time out there usually. Its not Mavis home as such either.

Re: introducing pup to older dog

You're going to pick up the new pup? Why not let them meet at the place you're getting the pup from. Then separate crates in the car on the way home. Doing this worked fine for me. I also took Ziggy to pick my puppy Kite from the litter (Ziggy wouldn't have anything to do with them). As she's fully vaccinated it was quite safe.
