Lily Off Lead..

Tomorrow!! I am taking Lily to a secure field and am going to try her off lead for the first time.

At home her recall is excellent. When I am in the front garden I have her off lead and she never wanders and if she trys to I only have to say her name once and she comes bounding back.

So wish us luck,, I am so excited.

Next week she is off to the seaside,,, her next adventure.

Re: Lily Off Lead..

Good luck

I find that if you can gain control over your dog at home it really can help your work outside. That said however, the big outdoors provide a lot more stimulus

We were so looking forward to Luika first trip to the coast, but unlike our other dogs, he just DETESTED the sea. We tried to make it fun by splashing around in the waves, but no way was he leaving the sand

Its such a shame, since his hydrotherapy has been slow going, but after several trips, he is eventually learning that water can actually be fun.

Re: Lily Off Lead..

I found Shen had perfect recall, that was unless a jogger snuck up behind us and passed without warning.

Re: Lily Off Lead..

You will be fine. I let all my pups off lead as soon as they go out, provided the area is 'safe'.

You probably know, but if you keep calling her to you every couple of minutes, giving a treat, then letting her carry on what she was doing, you'll really re-inforce her recall as she will learn that coming back means something good, but she also gets to carry on whatever she was doing.

Have fun!

Re: Lily Off Lead..

Can someone just explain the best way to improve their dogs recall. Is it a case of calling their name and rewarding with treats/praise?

Thanks!
Darren

Re: Lily Off Lead..

Pretty much. It is useful to first get there attention by calling their neam then use the command 'Come.'

Lots of praise and rewards, they are quick to learn. Of course it is also a case of making yourself the most interesting thing out there. Seems I am not as interesting as a jogger though!

Re: Lily Off Lead..

When the dog gets a distance away from you that you are happy with call them back reward then let them go again keep repeating this the dog will get use to the distance/gap between you and will in theory follow. good Luck
