Having the dog eager to deliver the toy all the way is better, building on success from a low distraction environment.

Think the 2nd point is a good one, and a danger of the method using 2 balls, where the dog hasn't started off by giving to hand or dropping at feet, especially if the dog's bright enough to keep track of the 2nd ball being distracted by it; even with it hidden, without it being shown or moved.
