Re: Mental stimulation
We've got the Running Egg and the Kong Wobbler and they're both great - highly recommend both. Although the Running Egg is very similar to a Boomer Ball so I wouldn't bother if you already have one of those (we have, but the Running Egg was brought as a prezzie).
Have tried the Nina Ottosson toys in the past and been quite disappointed - they're expensive and the dogs have figured them out in minutes which leaves them pretty much worthless as the dogs know what to do and don't really have to work their brains! Most of the toys in the range can recreated cheaply and easily at home - we play 'find it' games with treats under flowerpots/jam jars, plastic bottles with treats in, empty small cardboard boxes with shredded newspaper and treats etc.

Re: Mental stimulation
Cheers, Im going to buy the egg or sure and the wobbler. Just thinking on what of the others to get her as when she is left during the day she has started to eat the furniture and door mat etc,
So i think she is bored. Nothing has changed in her routine since she was 8 weeks so i want to get as many things to keep her occupied while in not in

Re: Mental stimulation
Dog has (in 2 locations) Kong Wobbler, another ball that dispenses treats, plastic Nina Ottoson Spinny, Dog Brick and Wood Nina Ottoson Turbo!? Picked them up on offer in Kennel Gate promotions, and regard them as value, as they've been durable, good as new 1 year on. Most dog toys get lost or damaged.
As a pup 12 weeks old he solved the Spinny 1st time without help. A GR year old, needed much assistance and was daft enough to try to chew the plastic bone, rather than find more food. Dog brick was got also right away. I had to guide an older 5 month old puppy tho at first, then she was solving it quicker than my dog, mainly as she would rush eating. The Spinny has been lent to 2 other Pups, Black Lab & a Shi-Tzu; both pups and owners enjoyed it; heard they purchased their own when it was returned. I'd be happy freezing the Spinny bone in place, locking the puzzle for later, if leaving my dog unattended; but initially supervision is needed and perhaps some guidance for dogs without persistence and own problem solving skills. There's web pages around with other self-amusement ideas, freezing standard kongs, making self powered tug/fetch toys out of bungee and a post; BC sites especially tend to cover this, due to the breed destructiveness caveats. I don't think the point of the "puzzle" toys is really to have the dog struggle overly to solve it; the point is the sniffing to find where the food is, the foraging, and making the dog work for the food. It slows down a meal and preoccupies the dog, so great for a break from close supervision of puppy in particular. A loaded puzzle toy is easy for a neighbour to place down when leaving, after dropping by during the day say. Fact is, given identifcal food placed in bowl & Nina Ottoson toy with dog watching, then placing them down simulataneousy and given permission to tuck in; my dog chose the puzzle toy not the lazy option. I have stuffed normal Kongs but found the dog would loose interest, he's not keen on chewing rubber toys though. I have seen posts, where ppl would have dogs willing to work at Kongs for hours, to get through to the tasty centre stuffing. Last edited by RobD-BCactive; 19-05-2011 at 05:24 AM..
