Treats, treats and more treats. Novak's trainer always said 'you only work for cash' lol. And it's true, you want something from them, give them a reason to do it.

Can I just recommend clicker training, Novak picked up sit, stay, down, leave, drop in minutes with the clicker.

Whilst I agree, and don't mind "bribery and corruption" some longer view is needed as rewards training gets misrespresented by the grumps.

Food reward is probably better term and small & smelly works, so for example tiny pieces of sausage 1/4-ed and sliced not bite size chunks which fill the dog up with "junk food".

Don't worry about the treat burn rate at times in initial training, it soon slows with older dogs who're relatively less food motivated and play & praise & functional rewards become very effective especially out exercising.
