Re: whats the best whistle to use

Im not convinced all dogs respond to whistles.

Ive tried various types over the years, and ive had zero reaction from either of my dogs. Not even enough so i could offer a treat so they could associate it with the whistle. I do whistle normally (no fingers - too much like fat little chipolatas) and they will look around, but ive done zero training in that respect. I find i yell a lot louder than i whistle.

That said, have you tried a shepherds whistle? Not always easy to use though.

Hmm tripod hates food bowls but may be just this once, blowing a whistle just before the bowl is put down would work, to get it started?

If they don't take any notice just starve 'em

[ only kidding ]

Oh im sure where theres a will, theres a way, but ive never really been into the whole dog training thing, and faffing about. Never read a book, never been to a class. Trial and error led me to find what works with my boys, and i have a pretty decent pair of dogs i think. Although i do try to pick faults in them at times, a weakness of mine

Re: whats the best whistle to use

Best type of whistle is the one your dog listens to. They aren't a magic wand. Pitches tend to be 210.5 211.5. Thunders aren't used by many. If u Google acme whistles u can pick them up for under 6 quid. They are the most popular as easily replaced. Pitch is a personal preference although if u do your groundwork training it becomes relevant to the dog

Re: whats the best whistle to use

But the first post. The dog does not respond to clicker or whistle. What has been done to make the dog interested in a clicker noise or whistle? It's same with many toys at first you need to teach them a game, then they love it.

Assuming the dog is not deaf, then you make the dog interested by "charging" the clicker, have treats, click when dog does something you like and give treat. Soon the click means something.

There's various ways to use whistles but there's no magic whistle I know of that doesn't require some training in some way. Even if it's only blowing it 3 times, when the dog's coming back to you (capturing, the dog eventually associates the 3 blasts with happy recall to you).

If you won't bother rewarding the dog or interesting it, then don't bother buying a whistle.

Didn't I just say that in fewer words? As u are agreeing with me I'm assuming I've educated you some what

As the poster doesn't say what she's training with the whistle I can't give specifics of training. But if its recall it starts in the kitchen not outside and is very easy to get started

Re: whats the best whistle to use

My mentor starts training her pups before they leave the litter, she has then whistle trained for their food by the time they leave! It was always my intention to do this when I was planning a litter (which is not going to happen)
I have always whistled Milly (finger job) many on the forum have heard me and I am loud! She is pretty spot on at responding - but never went any further! When we were doing the gun dog training we had just started with the whistle - but she reponds to my whistle more!
