No idea, because your post was not visible to me, when I wrote mine.

OK, I've read it and yes, we were thinking on similar lines about "magic" items. I would argue my post is aimed at fixing the notion of how clicker & whistle works before worrying about a whistle.

Of course the "Best whistle to use" is a Montana Lite as it has variable pitch and may reach 1/2 a mile, only problem is learning to blow it right. There you go "normal service is resumed"

Re: whats the best whistle to use

I'd recomend th eplastic oes, as per Statler. Don't get a metal one, on those freezing days in winter, you might just find it stuck to your lips (ouch)

Re: whats the best whistle to use

Get a fixed pitch easily replaced plastic whistle, 210.5 or 211.5 - many girly colours available for co-ordinating a look (mine are purple or green, better than boring black.

Adjustable whistles have a habit on unadjusting themselves.

Whistles are used in 'peeps' to indicate commands:
1 peep = sit/stop/look at me
2 peep = turn
3 peep (1 long,2 short in low sound style) = nose down and hunt
4 peep = return to me

Only a dog that's deaf can't be trained by whistle, the others just feign deafness

Thunderers tend to be primarily used in the setting world for 'stop'

Re: whats the best whistle to use

Another vote for the Acme 211 1/2.

Unless you are training a working spaniel - I'd stick to 1 pip means sit, and 3 means recall. Retrievers (and other pet dogs) dont need to learn a whistle cue to turn or hunt.

As many have said - the sound of the whistle means nothing to a dog - you need to associate it with something rewarding. If you dog doesnt recall already it wont magically start running back just because your blasting on a whistle....

Re: whats the best whistle to use

i have dogs (clients/my own) respond to 5p whistles. it's in the training, not in the sound.

Re: whats the best whistle to use

Hmmmm, now we got a Acme 210 as when a friend in the field blew hers, Phe really looked at her and my friend said "hmmm she's had the whistle before!"

Bingo!! I thought.

Does she listen? Does she hell!
