Lead Training

Hi, I have a 7 month of springer spaniel. We had lots of trouble with her in the beginning. She destroyed the carpet and started eating the walls so I have holes by her bed, but we got some advice and now at home she is the almost perfect dog.

My problem is, when we take her out for a walk, she changes into this mad dog, jumping and pulling. Once we get to the field again she changes into almost perfect dog again, she sits and I tell her to wait whilst I take the lead off and until I say she can go. She comes back to you upon a whistle and when the lead comes back out she will sit and wait for you to put it on and then the demon comes back and she starts to pull again. Its worse when we go out with our dog Juno as I take them both for a walk in the mornings before work. I have taken her out on her own in the evenings and although she is better she still jumps and pulls.

I hold the lead in my right hand and walk her to the left of me.

Please help as I get so stressed whilst we are out walking and I know this makes her worse as she picks up on it.

Thanks

Tracey x

Im not a trainer but you can give it ago, i would hold a short lead and just take her out, i would take sausage or some chesse with me when she pulls and jumps up tell her no and go back to the start make her sit if she sits treat her. Then start your walk again if she dose the same then turn around again and take her back she will get fed up before you when she starts to listen to you treat her make a fuss over her then start again, keep on top of her dont let her jump pull her back down and make her sit on the lead untill she is calm before setting of again good luck hun

Re: Lead Training

I recently went to a behaviourist seminar and she talked about this and she advocated using the 'behind' command. To get this she would put the dog behnd and hold the lead behin the back then every time the dog tried to come forward woudl block and say behind. It takes a while and you look a bit silly at first but i have to say it worked. Eventually you can just have the lead at your side and still have the dog walking just behind!

it worked wonders with mine!!

Re: Lead Training

Thanks for the advice. I have started taking Deefa out on her own in the evening and took the advice of treats with me. The first night she jumped like mad and I kept taking her back to the beginning of the walk eventually she got fed up. Everything she jumps I stop and wait for her to sit which is quite quickly now as she knows she will get a treat. She still pulls like mad but seems to be getting better. I have to take both dogs out together in the mornings as I don't have time to do indivual walks and well thats a complete nightmare. She doesn't stop jumping and the other dog pulls they are competing against each other. I will try the behind one and see how we go with that.

Thanks very much everyone and I will try and register on the other website

xx
