Re: Help please on jumping dog

The reason the dog jumps up more when your husband shouts or says 'down' more or more loudly is that your husband is giving the dog attention, so the dog percieves his jumping up as a way to get attention. He might be jumping up because he is excited or thinks your husband is going to take him out, but the reason here doesn't really matter.

To gett he dog to stop jumping up, your husband needs to turn his back to the dog (using a wall to steady himself if he needs to) and stay slient and ignore the dog. Eventually the dog will stop jumping or sit down. The second the dog stops jumping, your husband must reward him with attention and possibly also a treat. The aim of the exercise is to teach the dog that the ONLY way ot get attention it to behave in a calm way, and jumping up gets him nothing and is a waste of energy.

Your husband will have to be 100% consistent and bear in mind it may take some time as the dog has effectively inadvertantly already been 'taught' to jump up. In other words, your husband saying 'down' tot eh dog has reinforced the jumping up behaviour.

Re: Help please on jumping dog

I appreciate it is frustrating and difficult, especially with a big dog.

It WILL work, but it has to be done totally consistently, otherwise it won't. You need to make sure everyone behaves the same way.

It also takes along time. Connie had been 'taught' to jump up by her previous owners. They only had her for 3 1/2 months from 9 weeks to 6 months old. We have had her back for 6 months now. She still thinks about jumping up sometimes, but will get halfway up and realise it isn't worth it. She also still tries to jump up at other people occasionally, but now, if I say 'sit' she will do.

6 months! D

Re: Help please on jumping dog

My staffie was a flamer not only did he jump up he'd be all over you when you sat down.

I do allow him to lay on my knee but he has to be calm.

We ignore him when we come in how awful is that only for a few minutes well not even that long, then I call him, he has to find a toy then he comes and gets fussed.

It used to be world war III in our house, its a lot calmer and controlled now.

Sue

Re: Help please on jumping dog

I had the same thing going on with jumping and turning ur back on them and it didnt help us and especially i was in agony from the scratching on the back with the claws. I could only handle it for so long and then it was simply too painfull.
I decided to grab them on their collar and pull them down from me, say no, make them sit. Also did this when they were jumping at visitors.
This worked for me and cobi doesnt jump at all anymore, not even at visitors Maya sometimes does it but in the middle of a jump she seems to realise she is doing wrong, as she makes a quick turn in the air lol
but i think every dog is different and will react different.
