I particularly like the sentence at the end of the article "passive training is a way of life"
so to answer the questions....
an example of passive training - owner leaves food on worktop within dog's reach. Dog learns that counter surfing sometimes gets rewarded with food so repeats the behaviour.
an example of active training - dog pulls on lead to get to park. owner stops and waits for dog to stop pulling. Dog learns not to pull.
Yes we can actively train unwanted behaviours. For example, dog pulls on lead, owner says "heel" and pulls dog back. Dog learns that the heel position is at the end of the lead.
IMO passive training is not the same as accidental training. Passive training is not always bad and active training is not always good.

example of active training = teaching dog to weave in and out of poles

example of passive training = dog jumps up and gets it ears rubbed!!!!

example of active training unwanted behaviour = dog jumps up and grabs sleeve of owner, owner laughs and begins tug of war to retrieve sleeve instead of issuing stern leave it command!!!!!
