Barking

My male Jackadoodle (3yrs) has started barking quite aggressively at other dogs and people who walk past. He puts his back up and starts jumping in the air (not on the people). He is not an aggressive dog at all, he really wouldnt hurt anyone, when people do get close to him he cowers away or if another dog comes up to him while he is barking he will submit to the other dog. He didnt used to do this. It has only started in the last couple of months. It is just embarrassing and I am scared someone with kids will think he is really agressive and try to get him put down or something.

I really need help here.

Re: Barking

sounds to me like he is frightened.
Did anything happened which could have caused this behaviour?
Is his tail up or down when he barks at other dogs or people?

Re: Barking

No nothing has happened to him. The only thing that has changed is that we have a new puppy but I dont think that would cause him to be "frightened".

His tail is usually in a curl up his back. It not in between his legs if thats what you mean.

Do u walk them together?

My gsd barks sometimes at other dogs too and mostly when we walk our dogs together.
Barking at other dogs usually means "stay away from us, dont come too close". Its sounds sometimes worse than it is.
I know how u feel about feeling embarresd, i felt like that too until i understood my dogs behaviour

Re: Barking

Of course I walk them together, thats why I got another dog!

Im not asking how to understand it, I would like to know how to stop him! I cant afford to get one of those behaviourist people in as everyone always suggests!!

Re: Barking

From what I've seen on different shows, if you immediately turn around as soon as they start barking and walk quickly in the other direction for a few minutes, then turn back and walk towards whatever they were barking at and if they start again, then turn around again and walk quickly in the other direction and keep repeating until they stop the barking! Seems to work on TV but don't know if it does in real life!

Re: Barking

I think that only works if you have a lead on them! I live in the country and he doesnt leave my side so I dont need a lead.
