Nice blog article, so many owners seem to feel urge to apologise for their dog, rather than see how unreasonable the doggy ill mannered are, prodding and pestering or even treating dogs without asking.

Wink Ppl should ASK, not assume, not insist - and 1 pair of hands at a time...

yes - i saw a puppy who weighed less than 15# being 'petted' once by 6 or 8 jabbering, busy-handed children, one fiddling
with his ears, another scrubbing his rump, they were patting the crown of his head & his ribs... IMAGINE, while he sank
slowly to the ground with his ears down & his eyes the size of saucers! none of those children were being
horrible to him, he was not being hurt, nobody was pinching him - but he was overwhelmed.

i felt so badly for him - he would surely not get a happy impression of kids, from that.

Re: ART: 'Dogs are not public property!' - Ppl should ASK, not assume, not insist

Great article, alot of people stop and just stroke bella without asking. Shes not really a people dog and isn't bothered with the fuss. Even when we have people over at home she just intially greets and goes and lays down, normally by me. And children, well no its the parents, just let their children walk right up to her. Children really excite her and although she means no harm she can easily knock them over. Something I'm working on but is not helped by parents not listening when I say she will jump and I have to hold her to try and walk by

What a brilliantly written article! Have to admit, it's one of my bugbears, people just launching themselves at my dogs without so much as a word to me.

That's one of my pet hates Everyone seems to think that our Holls is a people dog as she's real small, but she doesn't like crowds, or being approached by surprise

Brillant!

My dog has to wear a high viz jacket when he goes out, telling people to not touch him, as he hates it!

Re: ART: 'Dogs are not public property!' - Ppl should ASK, not assume, not insist

Strangely once out of puppyhood I don't have that many numpties trying 2 accost my doggies, I wonder why that is

When i've been out socialising Ziva I have been quite rude at times 2 folks who try and crowd her without asking, I just won't tolerate it, had 1 kid in PAH jumping up n down n squealing, told her 2 shut the hell up, nicely of course

I had one lovely experience this week outside of a costas, the girl from inside saw me sitting at a table for OH 2 return with our coffees and she came over and asked politely could she come see the pupster which was lovely she also went and got a bowl of water for her which I thought was very sweet, her colleague did the same, so that will b a favorite haunt for me 2 sit n watch the world go by

Re: ART: 'Dogs are not public property!' - Ppl should ASK, not assume, not insist

Thanks for the rep LFL.

Sammy was on a lead for over a year because people would insist on talking to him or stroking him. He loves other dogs and it was always such a shame. But he is not the type of dog to run away from a person who scares him. Instead he will stand and bark at them!

Now he has this jacket and people leave him alone, he is off the lead and mixing with dogs every day.

Re: ART: 'Dogs are not public property!' - Ppl should ASK, not assume, not insist

oooh I like it - where did you get his jacket?

I have seen people using service dog jackets for fearful dogs, as in 'don't disturb - in training' etc.
