crate training- help!!

Hi there.

I am trying to get my puppy used to staying in his crate while im not there.
i am leaving him for ten minuits at a time but how long in between should i leave it? ive been doing ten mins every hour.
When i go to him after ten mins hes worn him self out so much buy moaning and barking that he the sleeps for quite a while. its proving quite hard, do i keep persisting?
he has toys, blanket and food and water there, but he just wont settle.
ive tried leaving him in a room with the crate door open but he just completely wrecks the place!
how long should it take for a puppy to get used to a crate?
Any help would be so greatful!!

Re: crate training- help!!

We have just had pup for 24 hours, yesterday evening we stayed in the dining room with him, crate door open, he wandered in and out. When he fell to sleep on the floor I put him into his crate, door open.
He is asleep in it now, shut, as i am off to collect son from Karate.
Please dont give up.

Re: crate training- help!!

hi there...i have a crate for my two poodles...when i got kai, i just let him go in and out of his crate, the only time i locked him in was at night or if i needed to go out.then i got mia, and she uses the same crate as kai,and i did the same for her as i did for kai..in my oppion if you keep putting your pup in there,it is possible he will end up not liking the crate at all.

Re: crate training- help!!

Our pup cried on and off for 4 nights before we read that many people keep the crate in their bedroom at night - we did that and overnight he changed - by the next day I could leave him in the crate with the door closed and no problems, whereas before he would have gone crazy if I shut the door! Within about a week he was sleeping through the night.

Try it tonight!

Re: crate training- help!!

so maybe if i try it at night in my room it may be better? hes not afraid to go in and out of it and id never just close him in there if he was clearly frightened!!
its all very well leaving the crate open but when i do that and i have to nip out he rips up carpet and make so much noise! i would think that that would make him more afraid of being alone in time!
maybe its just finding the best way for my dog! every one is different i suppose! will keep trying to find a way to settle him.

Thanks!

Re: crate training- help!!

Did you try to keep him in your room last night - how did it go - my Rocky would wine and bark (like a duck ) when we first tried to close the crate door but as soon as he started sleeping in our room - he was fine about the door being closed day and night - makes it easier if he is well fed, toileted and exercised before putting them in the crate.
