malcy boi is on a distinguished road
Is there a right way?

Hi Guys

We posted in an earlier thread about about older dog eating younger ones poo,we are starting to accept it is part of the game!!!

50s couple, had dogs all our life, younger dog (lab 19 months) is still pooing and peeing overnight. I put both dogs out at 11-1130 at night. When i get up at 6.00, poo and pee all over kitchen floor. Started to seperate them to see which one is doing, always young lab!!!!!!

We are old school, rub nose in poo and drag outside, not working. Is there another less humiliating (for the dog) way to house train or are we too late??

We love our dogs dearly and if we have to clear up in the morning for the next 20 years, so be it. We both feel there must be another way and would welcome any offers as how to modernly house train a young dog.

kind regards

malcy boi & sally

Hiya and welcome..Firstly for what its worth i have 2 toy poodles and the girl is a mare for peeing and pooing in the kitchen at night.Like yourself i put mine out about 11pm and either hubby or myself are up around 6am. Please don't rub their nose in it as they really won't have a clue as to why your doing it,and it won't achieve a thing.I know it use to be the thing to do,( i'm older than you ).
Can i ask, have you tried using a crate at night for your lab?

Re: Is there a right way?

Have a good read of the sticky HERE lots of good advice.

I remember being told to rub their nose in it when I had a dog as a child, but if you stop and think about it, what are you really telling them? How does doing this explain to them that what they are doing is wrong? Now that we know more about how dogs learn it is clear that they cannot make the link between something they may have done hours ago and your reaction now. Just like with a child, telling them off for something they did the day before has absolutely no effect.

Re: Is there a right way?

When you feed your dogs? Check time between meal and poo. Sometimes dogs can't hold for long time and simple change of feeding time is working. You can also give them extra time for relief in the middle of the night. Also is good idea to retrain them with housebreaking but this time without rubbing a nose, just patience and a lot of going outside. And do big deal with every poo and wee out of the house - price with food treats and a lot of fuss.
