Unhappy Distressed puppy when left :(

Hi, Im having some problems with my new puppy and hoping that you may be able to help! We have had her about a month (she is 3 1/2 months old now) and she gets very distressed when she is left alone. We have tried leaving her with lots of toys/bones/kongs, feeding her before we leave, leaving the TV/radio on but nothing works. She starts by whining and yelping and then after a couple of minutes she starts barking and throwing herself at the door - very distressed! We have tried putting her one side of a childgate whilst we are the other but as soon as we got out of sight the yelping starts - what would you suggest? We do not have a crate but do have a childgate. She does respond very well to treats (as we have found with other training). Any suggestions would be great, as we are worried that she may hurt herself when throwing herself at the door . Thank you!

Re: Distressed puppy when left :(

Hello!

What do you do when she starts crying? Do you ignore her, comfort her, correct her?

What are the sleeping arrangements at night - does she sleep alone or with you? If alone, how does she cope then?

Flo's "SA" was very mild, despite his breed being notoriously prone so it was safe to ignore his acting out and in time he got over it. He now knows my going out routine and although he's not too chuffed he copes.

Re: Distressed puppy when left :(

There is a huge thread in the first posts in the training and behaviour section here about separation anxiety and how to counteract it. When you say left alone, do you mean when you leave the house, or any time that you are out of sight? What is she like at night? Does she start when she sees you are about to go out, i.e. usual habits like putting on coat, getting car keys? Please read through the section; there are many experts giving good advice, but it is going to be a long process.

Good luck with it.
